2 main areas are still lacking support for laptops and tablet pc's.
1. Power management:
There needs to be native support for things like hard-drive spin down. The power management GUI still lacks options (only accessible via Configuration Editor), and packages such as laptop-mode-tools have to be installed and configured via a script. This is no good. This should be installed by default, and configurable via the power management GUI. Currently, the GUI also lacks an option for setting the cpu governor to Conservative which I believe to give better battery conservation than OnDemand.
2. OSK: On Screen Keyboard:
This is also badly lacking. Options to choose your desired OSK have been included in Gutsy but there is no provision to have it appear at login or when the screen is locked. There are many tablets that have no physical keyboard (known as 'Slates') and an accessible OSK is a must.
As far as OSK's are concerned, I would like to submit Cellwriter (http://risujin.org/cellwriter/) as a powerful alternative which should be included in the Ubuntu repositories. This software is highly configurable and includes hand-writing recognition. The author is currently working hard on adding more features.
