I wanted to play second life because my friend said it was good, so I downloaded and compiled the linux version without a hitch. I ran it and everything seemed fine, it logged on normally.
Then as soon as it had finished loading and my character appeared, it started to lag alot. As soon as I'd taken a couple of steps, it crashes my Xserver, locked my keyboard and mouse input and just kept rebooting the xserver again and again and again...
I had to resort to the magic SysRq keys and when I rebooted everything was fine. What happened?

I downloaded the Second Life client for Linux and extracted the folder and ran the main file. No problems here.
Why do you need to compile it? (I don't know much about it, so I'm genuinely asking)

My mistake. Yes I didnt compile it, just extracted and ran it.
I have disabled all optional graphical features and now the game runs (very slowly). I read on the site that it supports ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards. I'm running it on an integrated Intel laptop graphics card.
Obviously this is the problem, although It should be able to handle it. My graphics card can handle Unreal Tournament 2004 at full speed on max settings.

Hi, I'm having the same problem, I have an integrated intel video card and ubuntu gutsy, i start the application, log in and can even modify the appereance of the avatar and other stuff but as soon as i try to walk a few steps everything freezes. I have dual boot in my laptop, i installed the application in windows vista and runs perfect, but I don't want to be logging into vista just to play this, it's been a few months since i moved to ubuntu and have not needed windows for anything until know.

I'm getting the same issue, I'm using gutsy 7.10. I can load it up, do stuff but after about 10-20 seconds of walking around the whole system crashes and I have to use SysReq to reboot my entire system. Im using an Acer Travelmate 3012WTMi and used SL with no issues through most of the beta. I've tried while using fluxbox as the window manager and get the same issues too! Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure it must be something to do with the Intel drivers.
Maybe a more experienced user can shed some light on the subject

Yep, same trouble with a laptop with intel i850 graphic card.
It used to work fine on feisty before.
I may suggest to wait for a next release of secondlife or get one of the previous ones.

I think the problem has something to do with the Intel - Experimental modsetting driver. Previous versions of Ubuntu were fine. I might install an previous release of Ubuntu for the time being.
