i've used gimp probably longer than any other open source software ( i used firefox, first, but stopped using it quite a while ago). i just installed kubuntu, for the first time (after installations of ubuntu, from breezy to feisty) and decided to learn krita. so, what's similar? what's different? what will i miss? what can i do in krita that i couldn't in gimp? etc., etc...

Hi there,

It probably is not as exhaustive as one could wish, but I have a couple of entries about the subject in my blog:

jcornuz.wordpress.com (http://jcornuz.wordpress.com)

This is a photographer's view, though...

Take care,

Joël

In development, I know Krita has some awesome painting stuff coming... wet/natural media kind of stuff. I think Krita might be targeting itself more towards artists than the Web/Photog guys that Gimp seems to be aiming for.

The positives for Krita are....

* Support for most commonly used colour spaces... Including 16 bit per channel, CMYK & L*A*B.

*Support for layer effects....

*Interface is more familiar to new users

*Some good painterly features....

What it still lacks (compared to GIMP)...

*Image editing options are no where near as interactive.
*doesn't feel as complete as the gimp....
*can feel a little sluggish....

for me both are somewhat short of Ideal particularly as I like working in 16bit mode. But it hasn't been bad enough to drive me to go out and spend $1000 dollars plus on photoshop.

Krita looks good on paper, but it is slow and buggy. A little sluggish? Editing a 10 megapixel picture in LAB mode takes forever. Krita makes Photoshop CS3 look like a rocket! Enough said.
