View Full Version : here's my list of things that should be improved!

i've been waiting for gutsy to get out of the way before posting this... i have compiled a list of things that have bugged me over the years of using ubuntu, or just general improvements to make it "the best" because we all know it could, nay SHOULD be the best OS in the world.

1. Disk usage analyser merged with nautilus so you can just set the view type to be disk usage. possibly remove the stand alone tool.

2. Resolution/Location specific window size/position settings. It keeps a separate record of window sizes for each resolution setting. That way people who often switch from a mobile laptop to a laptop hooked up to a big monitor, they aren't inconvenienced by the window size settings.

3. A clickable GDM login screen, with a passwordless “guest” account by default (obviously with no sudo privileges). people who go to use my computer simply can't because they have to know my username and password.

4. “Commonly used applications” applet for gnome panel, automatically placing the top <x> most commonly used apps. i always do this manually by dragging items that i always use on to the top panel to the right of the main menu. this could replace the default shortcuts that are placed there

(ignore, already works) 5. a simple way to open multiple pictures side by side instead of just replacing the picture that you were looking at previously?

6. more reliable hibernate/suspend especially when it comes to network connections and beryl/compiz

7. some kind of “repair” option that will reload all networking modules and daemons. If networking is messing up (and lets face it it will probably not be bug free for quite a time) restarting the computer fixes it 95% of the time for me. linux is modular tho, so why not flex some modular muscle and have a nice easy way to restart the networking without restarting the whole computer.

8. the “window switcher” panel applet has some inconsistency issues when it comes to the size of the window icons. sometimes they stretch to fill the gap, sometimes they don't. right now they're not, even tho i have 8 windows open. they're all just bunched up to the left. but at other times they will fit across.

9. some kind of highly integrated (ie. gtk interface) help wiki, where you can answer a series of questions about your problem, the program generates a profile about your problem including things like your hardware, searches for others who have had the same problem, encourages you to add comments to existing pages, and encourages you to start a new one if no prior page exists (even if you can't solve it it's sometimes helpful to know others have had the same problem with configuration <y>. i know there are wiki's in existence, but we need integration and reduced redundancy.

10. the slide on focus animation in compiz-fusion is actually very helpful, especially (i expect) for new computer users. it just seems more intuitive this way. it would get them thinking about the conventions used in desktop os'. just an idea.

11. the "screens and graphics" app is very buggy for me, and the xorg.conf it spits out is so hard to edit by hand i find. i dont want to risk breaking my system by loading it up and finding the exact things that are wrong with it, but it was doing stuff like when i click on "widescreen" it forgets, when i click on "detect" it thought screen1 was screen2, when i change things in screen 1 it changes things in screen2, and so on. it generally ****** me in ways feisty never ****** me.

12. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE SORT VSYNC ISSUES!!!! it just makes things look so ugly when everything tears all the time.

13. compiz fusion has many cool features... none of them are explained. also, alt-shift-up for scale is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. especially when if you let go of alt or shift it cancels expose. why not assign it to the "windows" key, it makes sense!

14. everything on the right side of the panel seems to have a real problem when you change screen resolution.

15. having multiple monitors of different sizes can get very ugly, with bits of the panel being lost due to

16. sticky windows by default again feels and looks ugly for very little practical gain. this is a power-user option, and power users can figure out how to turn it on if they want.

17. having deskbar is cool, and tracker is cool, but having 3 different search methods is completely redundant. (deskbar, tracker, places>search) integration is where it's at.

18. default wallpaper still sucks.

19. the user switcher should use login names! i have multiple accounts with the same name (my name)... so seeing 3 "richard mansfield"s isnt so helpful...

20. bluetooth... when i switch it on on my laptop, it displays "bluetooth ready" but it is not at all ready. i can't send or receive anything untill i run another bluetooth app

so, that's my list. lets get discussing!

(i bold-ified the ones i feel are rather trivial to implement... they're the ones i expect would be most likely to be accepted)

Tracker and deskbar are the same thing. Also, Shiver and other animations don't seem that useful to me, would you give some examples on how some of the things you are suggesting could be used?

then why does it have an option to search in tracker. tracker has a whole different gui.

incidentally, tracker now is broken on my machine. it just says "exited with status 0" :(

shiver is useful because it's unobtrusive and draws attention to the fact that only 1 window has focus at any one time. the idea came to me because my mum now uses ubuntu and she has never used a computer before, and has no idea about how they work at all. i just think using compiz in subtle ways that draws the users foucs to what is happening is great. like the way that minimise shows the window fading in to the taskbar, that will help a novice user understand that the window is now represented by the icon in the window list.

admittedly, it is not such a big issue, but i thought it was worth posting.

i think most of my suggestions are pretty self explanitory... if you don't understand what i mean by some of them, by all means say which ones and i will try to explain them better :)

1. I agree, although I'm worried that nautilus is getting bloated enough.
2. N/A to me. I use only one monitor all the time.
3. Not by default, but an option would be nice. (It's already possible to set an account like that, but difficult.)
4. Like an applet that lists programs you use frequently (not programs that you drag to it)? I like the idea.
5. eog (default image viewer) lets you do that.
6. Agreed.
7. N/A to me. My network works great.
8. Mine works great.
9. Good idea.
10. I ehat shiver. lol
11. N/A to me.
12. No vsync issues for me.
13. My expose is windowskey+e (default) and I don't have to hold it.
14. N/A to me.
15. N/A to me.
16. None of my windows are default sticky...
17. They all user tracker as their search tool, they are just different frontends.
18. Agreed. (animal skin is much nicer)
19. lol, N/A to me.

The ones marked N/A mean I don't know what I'm talking about enough to say anything. They could be very good ideas, but I never use/have problems with those things so my opionion would not matter.

why not by default? what disadvantage does it have?

so it does! it didnt on feisty for me. tick one off the list :D

well, maybe not the exact shiver effect, but something quick and subtle that just draws attention to the fact that you have changed. i wont argue the case for this much, it's not a huge issue, i just thought it would be good

i am talking about "scale" really (i call it expose coz that's what it's called on mac)

but why the different gui's. i could understand having deskbar and places > search being different, but 3 different gui's is totally redundant.

as to all the N/A ones, well they affect me, and i'm sure they affect many other people :)

Although the guest may not be able to change your account, it can (by default) see your files and settings. If that were fixed, than it would be a much better option. But I still think it presents a security risk to enable by default. (maybe I'm just paranoid).

Sure it's a good idea, if you think of an effect better than the shiver effect you should post it here. (maybe I'll tihnk of one).

My bad, change that to N/A for me.

I agree now.

Yes of course, I never meant to imply that they are bad suggestions at all. What I meant was that I don't have anything to say about them because I've never used or never had a problem with them, so my opinion on those topics would be meaningless. (I tried to convey that by writing "N/A to me")

oh my god. i am using the effect where the windows slide out of the way and it is AMAZING. the speed needs to be tweaked a bit to get it looking sweet but it does exactly what i was talking about: draws attention to the fact that this window is now the one that is on top. plus it looks DAMN cool. i could spend hours just clicking on different windows! (i jest)

o wow, I used this effect before but that was when I had trouble with compiz (I idiotically set the blur plugin to blur behind all windows, and my graphics card is a piece of junk, so my fps was terrible), I stopped using dodge because I found it slow and choppy. But now that I've fixed my settings it looks much better, very smooth. I'm going to use this instead of the fade animation.

so what is the "next step"? how do i draw the devs' attention to my suggestions? i very much doubt they'll trawl through all the posts in this forum!

Lol I think you just have to hope someone reads it and tells a developer about it or a developer reads it.

I've given up on my ideas, I thought i had some good ones too but it seems that the most controversial ideas are staying on the first page, and alot of good ideas are being ignored. That's why we should be able to vote on some ideas, and voting should help determine the order!

true dat

oh well, one of these days i'll get round to joining the dev mailing lists
