View Full Version : Hardy's default background

I'm not suggesting changing the theme. I'm not suggesting changing the default colour. I'm not arguing for a lighter hue.

I am suggesting that the default backgrounds for Hardy are something more along the lines of the suggested animal skins here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Attic/Animals).

It's less Vista-like. The matt feeling is definitely in keeping with the Ubuntu feel. It's an idea that's come from within our community. Who's with me?

i think the pics are interesting but i think we should go with something new, but without going away from the ubuntu theme.

What is "something new"? I think the pics are pretty new.

What do you have in mind?

well i think to feisty default background is ok but the colors aren't very good.
just change the default background colors a little and i will be happy.
i don't think using animals is a good idea because not everyone has much interest in them

For me landcapes (for Ubuntu desert ones?) are my favorites.

But to each his own, I guess.

I liked the animal skin idea but it got old pretty fast for me. I think we need something new as well, snickers. :) Not sure what yet. I agree, amiga_os, that it shouldn't be Vista-like, it also shouldn't have any kind of Win or Mac look to it.

ya no vista i think vista looks to ugly.
i see nothing wrong with mac os x theme.
i am just fine with just a color desktop because colors won't get old but pics will.

I voted for Animal Skins (similar) because I think the background should be of bird feathers with an overlay of brown. I made some crude mockups. (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Hardy/Alternate/Feather) Just waiting for an artist to make the concept more appealing. :KS

Ubuntu is brown. No other operating system/distribution is brown. So, keeping up with the trend of being different from others, I suppose animal skins would be much better than traditional gradient wallpapers, or those overdone nature shots.

I'm using that elephant skin thingy right now. Looks very pleasing.

the brown and orange is ok but at least different shades would be nice like darker orange and lighter brown.

Why do all of the alternate themes seem half done? If you want to change to a blue based theme, you have to loose the Ubuntu buttons... Having the Ubuntu theme with different color pallets would be nice. (And different) Leave default brown, but you can go blue without changing any buttons or icons.

You can do this now, simply click "Customize" in the Appearance tool, and change the mouse/icons/whatever back to the default human version.

I am in the United States. I want it easy. :) Seriously, why not have a few themes where the icons buttons and backgrounds all have the same look, but different shading?

There is talk that it might be black and orange, whether them rumours are true or not i don't know.

orange and black would be nice if a darker shade on orange is possible.:)

I would not like Orange/Black. Sure, I am using it now (since it is only appropriate for halloween ;)), but as an overall theme it wouldn't be that good of an idea to me. I think, instead, Ubuntu should go white/orange.

I quite like this one:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Gutsy?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=ubuntu-lion-nologo-1680.jpg

It's not to dark, and it has nice subtle textures.

I like this one better. It is basically a mod of the one you posted with the logo on it.

I'm sorry, but I don't like the default theme at all, never have. Brown and orange is dull and boring, in my opinion. With all the fantastic wildlife pics available, the desktops are pretty lame as well. I think Hardy Heron should have a brand new approach to the default theme (maybe based around green or blue, if we would like to feel at one with nature). First impressions count. Even though Gutsy has got to be the best distro of Linux yet, it sure ain't the best looking!:)

Edit: Wow, I just voted on this thread, and it seems that I'm not the only person who thinks Ubuntu looks like Sh1t! Come on people, let's get it changed! How about a theme based upon worldwide unity and tolerance, instead of a few animal pics?

Brown/Orange is here to stay, so don't waste your breath. I like it fine, just needs to be polished a bit. :)

It doesn't look like that. It looks more orange than brown - especially the metacity theme. I don't like the choice of default backgrounds in Gutsy (I prefer the lion's mane background), but Ubuntu art people want to be different, so there is no sense fighting them.

I think that the majority of people that try Ubuntu don't like the default theme's colours. In a democracy, it's usually the majority that gets it's way. If enough people complain hard enough, hopefully their will, will prevail. Just my view, I would welcome anyone else's thoughts about this.;)

Ubuntu isn't a democracy (http://www.ubuntu.com/community/processes/governance).

My first reaction when I installed Warty was "Brown!", but I soon got over it.

i slightly agree with you, although i think that the major problem is not the color but the way it is done.maybe they can change the shade a little bit but they definitely should change the style.
