I think ubuntu really needs some new artwork. Currently ubuntu really falls behind distro's like suse which feature a very polished customized gnome/kde and artwork. I think ubuntu really needs a visual refresh. It would make a much better impression on new users who are thinking about switching to linux. Currently ubuntu looks very plain/boring, many of the icons (especially in the default human theme) are very dated and kind of blurry (Tangerine theme is a little better in this respect. I think the orange color theme isn't a bad idea, but it really just needs much more polish to give it a more aesthetically pleasing/ more professional look.

I'd like to see this idea extended a bit and have consistent widget styles across DE's. I think it would be great if, on a base install of Ubuntu when someone decides they want to use a KDE app (take Amarok for example), it would fit in seemlessly with the default Ubuntu style. You could also add coresponding color schemes for Kubuntu and Xubuntu.

Out of the box, I think OpenSuSE is the most professional looking install... color schemes and whatnot aside, their artwork just looks polished. The one place I think SuSE drops the ball is trying to make the integration between Gnome and KDE as seemless as possible to the user.

+1 to idea of making gtk/qt apps looking same as others in (k/x)ubuntu. If I remember Kubuntu uses gtk-qt-engine to have simmilar look when using gtk apps, but ubuntu doesn't have anything simmilar (no, qt4 default clearlooks like theme doesn't count).

Plain? Boring? Man, what is wrong with you. It looks in a good and elegant way. Warm and earthy colors! What do you want more? Leave the devs focus on much more important things like stability and performance issues!

It's all subjective.

Developers have nothing to do with the artwork; it's made by designers, not developers, and designers can't fix stability and performance issues.

Ah, okay. May it be like that then!
