View Full Version : Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 CDs covers

As a sequel to the feisty cd cover thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=422357), I start a new one for the Gutsy ones.
Nothing special this time, only changes are the version text. I'm looking forward to try to do a cd case this weekend.
Enjoy ! ;)

By the way, the picture uploader is a french website, so when you got the label you want after following one the links below, right-click on it and select "Save image as...".

Thank You so much. I wish Ubutnu team would release the covers for the official CDs.
How about one for Ubuntu server?

Nice! Do you have an XCF version?
Of course, yes. I'm going to send it to Dfreer, who provide host for the sources files since the feisty cd covers. ;)

(nice to meet some french "roast" on this board ;) )
I started to do those covers because of the lack in the DIY wiki page, when I discovered the ones done by Aelfric (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=579895).
By the way, I don't know anything about the DIY project and team... I just managed to find this site (http://diy.devubuntu.com/) (??) and... that's all.
What's more, I'm going to make a (little) website to sum up all the CD/DvD covers, labels (and maybe cases) using the host provided by dfreer. We talked about it in the feisty covers thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=422357&page=5#post3452341).

Do you need one ? If so, I will do it.
I decided to don't make covers for the server edition 'cause I don't know if they are that used, and I'd like to do something which look more "professional", even if I haven't any idea at this time. ;)

The marketing team talks via the mailing list (https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-marketing). You could ask them. I'm sure they would love the idea.
There is a need for DIY items, and those covers are really nice.
(never heard of the devubuntu.com site, did you check the link I provided in my previous post?).

Maybe. But as I don't know how much time I can spend on it, I really don't know if I have to join or not. ;)

I found the link to this dead site in the wiki page (your previous link, yes).

Hmm, yes, found it, sorry.
That project really needs some new work.
Thanks for providing the covers anyway that suits you, Ubuntu users will find them if you get a link in here :)
We have a gallery (http://ubuntuforums.org/g/) on UF (link in top banner), with a section for Linux art. That could also be a convenient way to have them available.

You can just download from the link and modify in Photoshop/Gimp/CS3 or which ever program you use, these were made using PhotoImpact 10
Thanks for the comments

The gallery could be a convenient way for hosting images, but not the source files . ;)
That's why I talked about a site to manage the covers and their source files. It would be ugly to use some upload site, and manage all the links. The question is, do we really need a whole site 'only' for covers and cases ?

Right, hmm, sorry :)
I'm in the marketing team, would you like me to ask how to give you access to upload the files on the ubuntu servers? The wiki is just a wiki, so a wiki account is enough to edit a page, but I'm not sure about hosting the sources files.

Isnt some of the software on the cd under the GPLv3 license now?

I think some of it is, while some of it isn't (Firefox is an example of one piece of software NOT on the GPLv3). The GPLv3 is backward compatible with the GPLv2, so there is no conflict.

I tested on the wiki, and I'm able to upload files to the DIY page (using my launchpad account). At this time, i'll still ask dfreer to host the files, and I may use the wiki for the LTS.

Good idea to use the default gutsy wallpaper. ;)
You could maybe reduce the size of the ubuntu logo and text, in order to make some margins around it.

Hi
I'm new to Ubuntu CD cover/label creation. I've downloaded some SVG source files and will use the elements for our Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Swiss Remix. Thanks for all the work which has been done before!
Now I'd like to use the high resolution photos of the Gutsy Gibbon (https://shop.canonical.com/images/ubuntu710.jpg) cover. Does anybody know where to download them?
Thanks for your support, best,
Matthias

I only found the feisty circle of friend here (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DIYMarketing?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=ubu_704_rgb.png).
The picture on the 7.10 cds seems to be new, don't know where to get it.

Hello,
like I explained on the french forum, I've done a Gibbon mascott a few months ago. But I'm really lame with inkscape, so the vector file is hardly usable (it's only a vectorized bitmap).
I'm looking for someone to transform it, like someone did on my fawn mascott

Hey Guys,
I searched but did not find this thread initially, then a little mouse gave me a link after starting a new thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=622272)....oh well.
Here is my donation to the CD cover art work. The images are a little small, only 700x700, but I intended these to be used with direct CD printing. (such as HP and Epson style photo printers that dont need to be connected to a PC) I tested these on my Epson PHOTO R300 and the size and file type worked well. I created these using gimp so if anyone wants the layers let me know. Also, please feel free to add suggestions.

I like it. The only thing I would suggest if you asked me for suggestions would be to make the child's drawing look less like it was just a drawing scanned in and extracted from a background. If you're comfortable with vector art, I'd suggest playing around with the image and stylizing it a bit to match up with the rest of the label. You could actually just vectorize the outlines and leave the coloring as is, reminiscent of a coloring book.
(There is also a slight white outline around the little round Tux, but depending on where you got that image from, there's might not be much you can do about it)

Much brighter than the other contributions, hopefully not too overpowering though. If anyone wants the GIMP .xcf file, I'll email it - too big to attach (2.7 MB)
Your CD says "7.04" and this thread is for "7.10". Can you fix it please? Otherwise, it is a very nice CD! I like it better then mine! heheh
Edit: added gutsy 7.10 version of the cover

Your right, sorry. The Edubuntu version was done in haste as I had a class that wanted a CD and I was trying to finish it in a hurry. I can fix the white line and the offset on the child drawing. I am thinking about using the TUX (second CD art) for my new Edubuntu as that was my daughters favorite.

*Also, I really wanted to use the graphics I saw one, of three children holding hands in a circle, but I could not find a high resolution version that I could use. Does anyone have that as it would be the BEST for Edubuntu!

@ ARhere - Glad you like it! I overlooked the 7.10 requirement in the thread title, and the GIMP .XCF file has the text for 7.10 built in if anyone wants to modify the graphic to suit their preferences. I did however post a PNG version in the previous post via an edit in case folks don't use GIMP. :)

I did not find this thread until now and I didn't find the latest Kubuntu CD/DVD label and jacket artwork, so I made some. Available in source (GIMP and SVG) for editing. Languages in different layers. Ready to print and use. I'm going to try to get this uploaded to more visible locations like the DIYMarketing site too.

A thought has crossed my mind and that is that folks should also make available the source or a version that can be modifide in GIMP this way people can continue to use the favs and just change the version numbers etc
