Usually it is available even sooner with very little changes but the real fun begins after the summt.

Windows for gaming, MacOS for working, Linux for fixing. :D

That's cool. :)
Yeah, I barely ever use stable software...
How can I upgrade when it is ready?

Yeah, starting update manager and reading "your system is up-to-date" is such a disappointment ;) And it's running stable too :(

Go to bed now, dude! You don't need an alpha version. There is no need of it. It will crash and make problems. It may even damage your computer. I wonder why would anyone try an alpha?

Some people like to test the newest software, report bugs, and thus help the development not only of ubuntu, but of the many open source projects associated with it. It is how all open source software improves.

I think I have an addiction. At first I was happy with stable releases but I needed more. I tried Xubuntu but I still needed more. I started trying betas... and alphas but it still wasn't enough. :D

You need to try Linux From Scratch. Or else work in kernel development :P

I hardly believe this guy is a tester. He/she seems to enjoy destroying computers.

I am a kind of tester and am yet to break a computer. On the other hand I have fixed quite a few.

BTW, to clarify: this is very exaggerated and was meant as a joke. I really just like bleeding edge software and hardware. Often I can't afford the hardware but as Ubuntu is open source I am quite an upgrader. ;)

It's not a mania. =)
We're just really excited about Ubuntu. And the sooner the first build comes out we can start making Hardy better.

No. I am a good person and I am concerned about his health. He needs help. :)

I switched to Debian Sid for a while...:) Running kernel 2.6.23-1 with help from kernelcheck... Turbo. Never used so fast OS...
But its "rock solid".. Debian rolls out new Gnome packages
Get:13 ftp://ftp.debian.org sid/main libgnomeui-dev 2.20.1.1-1 [428kB]
Get:14 ftp://ftp.debian.org sid/main libgnomeui-common 2.20.1.1-1 [803kB]
Get:15 ftp://ftp.debian.org sid/main libgnomeui-0 2.20.1.1-1 [362kB]

Or you can install Debian Sid ;)
I know, you'll lost all ubuntu goodies, but you'll get unstable software !

Yes, but some software are older... Like OpenOffice.org :(
I will stay with gutsy until Hardy Beta... And test hardy alpha in virtual and / or vmware ;)

I hardly believe this guy is a tester. He/she seems to enjoy destroying computers.
I'll repeat part of an Email I sent to a friend that asked me the same questions:
These are people that I've know thru testing---we all live for forwarding the future of Linux (& enjoy bouncing ideas off of each other)--it's a big community of like-minded fiends---I mean friends......
To be serious--we all talk as the new release shapes up & help each other & Ubuntu from one release to the next--we are the "glue" that makes it work for all the users that come after us.
It takes a certain amount of Linux-knowledge & a fair amount of guts to alpha/beta test--but the fun is running something that almost none are running--plus there is the comradeship of the group that likes to stay on the "bleeding" edge.....
If your idea of "fun" is talking to people all over the world & at the same time debugging software you care about--maybe alpha work is for you---I recommend it highly--I number friends from almost every country on the globe & we all share a bond that is without borders.......
Cheers!!

If I remember correctly the first alpha is due on the 29th of November.

I will start with the 4th version, since the first ones are usually unusable.

I'm not very inspired by the new name. Tried a few things with bird pictures and drawings, nothing convincing. I'll probably use something different.

I wouldn't say that, really. I was using 64-bit Gutsy from right around Tribe2 and didn't have many problems, none that were really show-stopping or over aggravating (until the RC came out and gdm was freaking out, but that was an easy fix :-D). Even if there are hiccups, that's what helping as a tester is for! If you have a machine that you use but don't rely on 100%, throw it on there. If something breaks for you, it's most likely broken for other people too and a fix will be out shortly. :)

I do too, but I also enjoy being *forced* to learn more about Linux.
No sarcasm - I run bleeding edge, to force myself to learn more (how to fix things when they go wrong, etc.)
It means I can help OTHERS out with their problems, because I've done everything myself.
Note that I take this approach with pretty much all software - how did I get so good troubleshooting Windows? I broke things, and learned how to fix them myself.
