View Full Version : server upgrade

I manage 3 7.04 servers at an ISP. They are all active production DNS, two do mail, two do web hosting. And of course serve a myriad of other functions. One even has the ability to run a very basic gnome.

My question: is it worth it to upgrade to 7.10 (true server release) considering I do want to go to hardy when it comes out (for LTS)? Or would I just be asking for trouble?

I've upgraded desktop machines plenty of times and am not frightened by the process and I've actually never had a problem except when a pc crashed in the middle of the upgrade... don't know what happened there. But I just had to ask.
And for anyone who says go ahead... how long would you wait after the actual release. One month? Two?

Leave well alone. Finger trouble causes more problems than any other reason on Linux systems.

Personally, what I would do, if you could swing it, is put 7.10 on a none-critic box, test everything out and then make a decision. Obviously you don't want to push out a new OS to mission critial machines, but I'd test it first before I did anything.

Also, if not a lot has changed server wise between 7.04 and 7.10, then waiting for LTS might be prudent.

if I wait for LTS would I have to upgrade to 7.10 and then upgrade again to 8.04??

At the moment one box is only critical as primary DNS... if something did go wrong I could easily turn one of the slaves to master while I straighten out the problems.

Yes, it is advisable (if not absolutely necessary) to upgrade without skipping a release.

Whilst of no help to you (running 7.04) the intention for 8.04 is that it will be a direct upgrade from 6.06. Time will tell how well this will work in practice!

so in all actuality I may as well wait a couple months and upgrade the test server to gutsy and then when hardy is ready do it again and then let it rest until the next LTS. These are brand new dual core machines hosting a small ISP. They will have a long life span.
