hi,
I have a problem with my sound after i've installed pulseaudio. I can hear login/out sounds, Totem and Rhythmbox have sound, but Mplayer and flash don't have sound.
I removed the pulseaudio packages and it's still the same.
This is my mplayer output:
[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound
Starting playback...
no more pulseaudio for me, i just want my sound working again, please. :)

Did you make sure to purge the package and reboot?
sudo aptitude purge pulseaudio

Yes I purged the pulseaudio packages and the alsa packages. Then I reinstalled the alsa packages. Still the same problem. :(
Mplayer (using alsa) output:
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_hw.c:1242:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: Device or resource busy
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
[AO_ALSA] Playback open error: Device or resource busy
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound
Starting playback...

Anyone? :(
Don't want to reinstall for such a silly reason. (and 1 day before the gutsy release)

Sudo dpkg-reconfigure ALSA.

bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base
bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-utils
bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libasound2
You may need to execute the asoundconf(1) set-default-card macro.
bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
ICH5
SAA7134
UART
bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ asoundconf set-default-card ICH5
bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libesd-alsa0
bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libao2
bb10@bb10-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-sound-base
still nothing :(

ALSA and OSS are definitely borked.
When I try a test sound in sound preferences with ALSA and with OSS i get this error:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Resource busy or not available.

Could try reinstalling the alsa stuff...

You'll need to tweak the steps to meet your needs... This (http://mrtrick.org/2007/10/15/gutsy-now-with-sound-again-finally/) is what I had to do to get sound back in order on my machine.

Just to confirm, it's only certain applications that are giving you trouble? Such as mplayer?

Yes, mplayer and flash from what i've tested right now. Everything that uses OSS or ALSA.
ESD is working, because i can hear sound when i test it in the sound preferences. Also, the login/logout sounds are working and rythmbox and totem have sound to (unless i set sound preferences to ALSA or OSS, so they are using ESD when i set it to auto)
I guess i'll have to reinstall, huh? :(

I'm having the same exact issue. It appeared after yesterday's updates though - not after installing pulseaudio.
