It looks like the KDE4 Beta3 packages have made it into Gutsy. However, I cannot log into KDE4 as I did before. I get the splash, but just when the desktop should appear, I am thrown back to the GDM login screen.

Has anything changed for the login since Beta2?

Beta3 ?! KDE 3.94 is beta3 ?!

Maybe a bug in beta3 for the login you're seeing.

i even deleted my .kde4 in home directory, but same pb.

check the kdestart file for the 4 export lines too... they got removed in the update... but not working.

running export lines in 3.5.8 then plasma works (sort of) but i cant run anything !!:guitar:

Installing kde4base-dev and all dependencies did the job. In Beta2 kde-workspace had been sufficient. Now it looks grrrreat!

I want to see screenshots too. Not only that, but I'd like to install it but I don't want my apps menu cluttered with KDE3/4 stuff because that would be confusing to have both. I wish they'd make a live cd.

With all the new features, do you guys think KDE4 will run just as fast as the previous versions? KDE is the fastest desktop to me and I hate to see it get slow with all the effects and stuff.

I was having the same problem of being kicked out at the splash screen and that fixed it for me too.

@jlacroix-- the kde3 menu isnt affected when kde4 packages are installed. They're totally separate, so give it a go!! (and make sure you install kde4base-dev as well as kde4base-workspace)

check out a beta3 review and plenty of screen shots here: http://rudd-o.com/archives/2007/10/16/a-visual-stroll-through-the-world-of-kde-4-beta-394/

there is also a Suse Live CD with KDE4. It isn't always up to date with the latest beta though. Right now it has beta2+ packaged. Check it out:

Beta 3 has much more than Beta 2 but still needs LOTS of work. It's not ready to replace KDE 3 for me, but It's still fun to play around with.

Well, I did it, but it barely ran at all. There's not even an applications menu! There's no way this will be ready in time for December. :(

Most people is just getting the wrong picture about KDE 4.0

KDE 4.0 Beta 3 is all almost RC quality, the only single part of the desktop that remain being Alpha is the all mighty Plasma, that's why the desktop felt bad, however, there is a menu, it's kickoff.

Does anyone have a more precise idea on what the Beta misses when the startup issue occurs? kde4base-dev with all its dependencies is quite a lot of packages, especially if you're not an active developer.

that is the problem you run into when you try to run beta software,

Personally, i tried kde 4 beta 3 and it wasn;t worth the download yet, plasma is notquite ready yet.
