ICH4 no sound

everything is set up fine... modules loaded... alsamixer is configured ... but there's no sound with my ICH4 sound chip (intel) on gutsy

try updating to the latest version of alsa-driver (have to compile it from source)

that's no bleeding edge sound chip...

just oldfashioned many many years old ICH4..

why do i have to compile alsa-driver for this to work? did nobody patch that in kernel?

should this be bugged to ubuntu or tu alsa?

at least on my laptop, I had to enable External Amp for sound to work. And that was with the latest Gutsy drivers. I had tried recompiling alsa drivers and doing all sorts of steps that worked for other people but nothing had worked.
