just installed gutsy rc and upgraded it. when i do 'system > preferences > appearance > visual effects > extra' i get an error saying that the composite extension is not available. when i check in synaptic, i already have compiz installed. i have already enabled the proprietary drivers for my ati radeon x550 video card. what should i do?

I had the same problem, while using the open source ATI drivers (waiting for ATI/AMD's 8.42 ), and compiz wouldn't work even though I had direct rendering on.
So all I did to fix the problem was use synaptic package manager to fully remove compiz & then just apt-get compiz again on the terminal & it worked

You might want to wait for the proprietary 8.42 drivers which might just come out tomorrow
it has aiglx support so you'll be able to use compiz

hopefully XD

edit - I have a radeon x800 btw

before i upgrade to 8.42 should i enable or disable the current driver?

When I use the fglrx proprietary driver, I usually just upgrade & it would always work

would use the this wiki

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page

hopefully the 8.42 drivers come out tomorrow
it'll be the most exciting day for ATI ubuntu users ^_^

if you really want to use compiz now though
you'll have to remove the fglrx drivers
& use the open source drivers

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver

& do as I did by uninstalling & reinstalling compiz
might work

also, using the open source drivers on gutsy gave me a small problem with the resolution setting at 1600x1024 during the login screen (even though I didn't select that resolution)
so you might get that problem too, with it going out of range

for some odd reason enabling that resolution allowed me to actually view the login screen
even though my max resolution is 1280x1024

just a heads up on that in case you might have a problem with the open source driver
