View Full Version : No progress bar for boot or power-off in Gutsy

I used a couple of the Gutsy betas, and beside a few minor bugs, everything worked fine. I did decide to hold off until Gutsy was final, and I continued to use Feisty.

When the RC of Gutsy was released, I opened up my BitTorrent client as fast as I could. I downloaded, burned, and installed. However, I was disappointed to experience no progress bar at boot or at power-off. And to make matters worse, it seems like Gutsy takes forever and a day to boot. :(

I figured it was just a small bug. I reported it, and stayed atop released updates. After the problem wasn't fixed, I gave up and went back to Feisty.

So, here I am... I noticed there were a few changes to the daily release, so I downloaded and hoped for the best. Sadly, my problem still exists. There are no updates available, and I'm stuck with a machine that takes forever to boot... and has a small bug. While none of this is all that big of a deal, it still saddens me to have this problem.

I'm hoping someone will know a little more about what is going on. Any information is welcomed. Thank you!

How much RAM do you have? If you don't have a whole lot, then you might have a while to boot because readahead can't do much. I recommend using Xubuntu for machines with less than 512 MB ram, as Ubuntu is getting too heavy for other machines.

I have 512MB of RAM (some of that is shared with the onboard video, but I don't even have the driver enabled). I didn't have this problem with any of the betas (now I did have other problems, but nothing major).

what kind of graphics card do you have, have you installed the latest driver for it in the repos? have you checked to see if the system reports any errors in the system log? and lastly have you tried using boot up manager (bum) to prevent un-necessary services from starting?

Well, it's good to know that I'm not the only one with the problem, but at the same time, it's bad to hear others are having it...

The system seems to run fine once booted, but it's quite annoying to deal with...
