It's available in the package nvidia-glx.

From what I understand Version: 100.14.09 would work but its not available and I to follow some directions to install it myself but don't want to deal with the trouble, anyway thats not much of a solution since the problem is with a broken driver making the older one available seems like the only way to make sure that gutsy works by the release in a few days...

Here is the bug report to keep an eye on which lists the methods:

i tried to install it, but it wouldn't work on my system, it went to the failsafe configuration utility....

bethaviv thats not a solution, i mean yes it might work even though when i followed the directions last time it gave me some trouble, but a real fix would be to make the older driver available in the repositories.

if there is any tip on making the nvidia-glx driver work with my card would be appreciated.

I'm not sure where you're checking for packages, but it's in synaptics.

And... yes... it is a solution... might not be one that's easy or simple... but it's a solution.

so i installed the nvidia-glx driver in synaptic , and it forced me into low graphics mode....

is there anything else that is needed to be done to get it to work with the 7300?

and yes i know that installing the drivers manually may work, but what I mean by it is not a solution is that Ubuntu "just works" and this doesn't and its a big deal, especially with the release date 2 days away.

What I had to do was install ENVY, I only use it to remove the nvidia drives, I then forced the re-install of the kernel, then I installed the 9639 (nvidia-glx) driver.
I am running the same card as you, and have not had a lockup or freeze for over a week. Since the 9639 driver is in the repros I didn't have to worry about losing the gui when the kernels were updated over the last week. Everything is working, including full screen games (Wesnoth etc) without having to stop or start Compiz. This works for series 7 cards, cause we don't need the 100.XX.XX drivers. My machine "feels" rock solid. I have had up to 9 programs multi-tasking at the same time. Right now I have TVTIME running, on one cube face, XCHAT on another and Firefox on this face.
As much as I'm a geek for the "latest", I would much rather have a stable machine. An right now I know my setup just works. I might experiment with the nvidia bimaries, But I have lost a lot of sleep over the last couple of months getting to this state (heck dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, is my best friend, LOL!!).

Long Live Ubuntu

what do you mean "forced reinstall of the kernal"? And how is it done?

I have the latest drivers from nVidia and it still hasn't fixed the problem

I used Synoptic and then "mark for re-installation" I did it for every kernel and restricted-kernel module I could find installed.

so, I used envy to remove the nvidia driver then i reinstalled all the kernel items and restricted kernel items then I installed the nvidia-glx driver and ran nvidia xconfig, i rebooted the machine and it booted me into the failsafe low graphics mode.

how is ubuntu done tomorrow with this problem still evident?

You might have to "massage" your xorg-conf . Thie following is one I use for single-monitor/ single-video card

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
