Market Research Question - Is this the right place?

Since this is the Market place so to speak, I was wondering if anyone knew if there was some special official way to do research on competing companies in a certain field.

I am working on the Competition part of my business plan and have identified who I would consider to be my competitors, but not sure after that.

Pretend you are a customer, who will have to choose between you and your competitors. What's the customer interested in? Most important, why will they choose you?

You could also hire a consulting agency to do the leg work for you, but it could cost you thousands of dollars.
