I'm not quite certain what you mean here...xfce4 is itself a desktop environment. Are you perhaps confusing xfce4 (desktop environment) with xfwm4 (window manager)?

Um.. what macgyver2 was trying to tell you is that xfce4 does not require Gnome because it is the same type of program as Gnome. Both Gnome AND xfce4 are desktop environments that give you an attractive interface for your computer. In other words, they both do the same thing.

See here:
http://www.xfce.org/

and for convenience so you know what was being referred to:
http://www.xfce.org/xfwm4-theme-howto/

and a quick forum search turned this up which you might appreciate:

xfwm4 is a window manager for xfce4, just like gdm is a window manager for Gnome.

I'm pretty sure that if you install xfce4 using Synaptic it will work with gdm and will not require xfwm4 to be installed. However, you can install it if you wish.

At this point I am going to recommend you go to Google and do two different searches, one of xfce4 and one for xfwm4 and spend a little time researching and reading.

I think the question is whether or not it's a dockable applet in the XFCE bar-thingy. I'll find out next time I power on my laptop....and if it's not, then it should be.

I can't seem to figure it out (just switched to xfce4 from Gnome on a whim and I'm really liking it).
I'm working around it at the moment by running 'gtkwifi run-in-window' and just leaving the little window in the corner of one desktop.
If it's not possible to cram it into the xfce4 panel, I'm thinking of learning about xfce plugins and seeing if some sort of wrapper would be possible (perhaps just an alternative UI using the gtkwifi backend code).
Though I'd be happier if it wasn't necessary to fiddle with it so much  .

Just to get the words right. xfwm4 is the window manager for xfce4. Metacity is the window manager for Gnome. gdm is program that takes care of the graphical login to Gnome and xfce4.

Exactly =P

A window manager is what puts the buttons on the top of the window and such. Many dont like metacity in gnome and decide to put something else in...

Kind of an old thread, but did anyone every find a way to run gtkwifi in xfce4 other than using:
gtkwifi run-in-window
?

GTKWifi is pretty much exactly what I want if I could somehow put it in my taskbar/system tray in xfce4 instead of having it floating in a window.

Thanks

Yep, pretty easy really :)

1. Install xfce-xfapplet-plugin from synaptic.
2. Right click on the xfce panel where you want it, and click Add New Item.
3. Choose the XfApplet option from near the bottom of the list, and press OK.
4. In the dialog that comes up, choose the Wireless Connection Manager near the bottom of the list, & press OK.

Problem solved, hopefully.

Have fun.

Great help, thanks. Does anyone happen to know if theres a difference between xfce4-xfapplet-plugin and the one thats part of xfce4-goodies? I'd of thought they're the same thing, but they're not counter-indicative or anything. Either way, works great now. Thanks again.
