Yesterday I installed about 70 updates and rebooted. As soon as the ubuntu splash screen came up, the progress bar halted immediately. I rebooted without the quiet splash and saw that it hangs on "Clocksource tsc unstable". I read elsewhere that you can sometimes get around this by disabling ACPI but my laptop's BIOS doesn't give an option for this. I did change the clock speed in the BIOS from dynamic to always high in the hopes that this would have the same effect of disabling ACPI but still no dice. Up until those last updates, Gutsy was running fine on this laptop (Toshiba Portege M200).
