I'm trying to make the xfce-panel background transparent (making the panel itself tansparent also makes the items contained therein transparent; not what i'm looking for), but I have no idea what property(-ies) I need to be looking at, and there isn't too much documentation out there. Can you even define a color's alpha level in gtkrc? any way of doing this?

I've been looking for something similar and this was the closest I found: http://xubuntu.wordpress.com/2007/10/12/howto-set-a-background-image-for-your-panel/ (original source (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3517612&postcount=396))
From your screenshot it looks like you could make an image the same colour as the desktop background and set it as the panel background image. However, I think the panels have an outline, and it's more of a trick than actual transparency, so it's not perfect.
