I've been experimenting with a wallpaper after reading a thread on the new look for Ubuntu that will be implemented in Hardy Heron (Link to thread) (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=565685).
I also plan on making my first theme to go with this wallpaper, and will probably upload it as a complete package on gnome-look.org
So, basically, what do you think?! I've uploaded two versions, a 1280x1024, and a 1440x900 for widescreens. :D

and the 1440:

EDIT (Nov 5th): Uploaded the initial release of my theme here (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Zest?content=69103). :D

It looks really nice. Depending on what direction they go with the theme, this might be a really good match for Hardy Heron.

I really like that & that's surprising, as I thought I'd never got over the loss of brown planned for hardy.

Thanks for all of the comments! :) I should have an update soon, which I'll post here.
I'll also be looking at starting my first theme very soon too, which I'll probably post on gnome-look (if its successful!) as a complete package with the final version of this wallpaper.

I said I'd start an orangey theme - and so I have! I've only got the metacity part done at the moment, and small parts of the gtk theme.
Here is a screenshot (I'll put it up for download when its more finished if anybody wants it):

It's OK, but I like the default Gutsy one better.

The wallpaper is really nice, just the right tone of orange.
I don't like the theme that much, the borders are way too think and the window decorations look a bit stained by the black. Other than those points, this could be a really nice hardy theme :)

I like it.
It's a lot more lively than the plain old brown.
makes a nice default theme background for a proffesional environment like a school or library. or other public system.
Fun and functional.

I chose to have thicker borders because I always find it really hard to resize windows with most themes (borders are too skinny). At the moment they are 5px, but I'll see what its like at 3 or 4 pixels wide.
Do you mean the panels make the border look stained, or the outlines of the buttons? I've changed the buttons already (well, Im kind of half way through) - I'm experimenting with a white line on the outside, and also a slightly browner colour.
I've also done a bit of work on the wallpaper.
Progress is slow - I'm too busy!! I'll post the updates soon. :D

i like the wallpaper lots, much better than the skidmark that is gutsy default, the metacity theme is too bright a tone of orange imo too loud.

Ok, the weekends given me a bit of time to work on this. I went with the suggestions of darkening the title bar slightly, and also decided to do a new version of the buttons - no idea why, an idea just wondered into my head, and I decided to try it out!...

And a slight change to the wallpaper - just changed a couple of colours, and the position of a couple of lines.

Ah, the buttons are brilliant! Good work! In the background, I think you need to make the colours more similar, but still great!

I'm loving it. Currently awaiting your theme upload, quite anxiously, actually. At the moment I've got the latest of your wallpaper running on my machine with the Woody control theme, ThinMC window borders, and the MonoBlack icon set. It all fits together quite nicely, a good mix of earth and orange. Best of luck!

That's pretty good but IMHO the title bar still blends too much into the wallpaper. I'm a big fan of StormCloud (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/show.php?content=68128). Have you tried something in that direction? Not sure if black is the way to go though. Take a look at it if you want...
The wallpapers are great by the way. Keep up the good work!

The StormCloud one is really neat, you could possibly try it with the orange...but the colours would be harder to match.

Totally agree here, the titlebar needs a bit of work, though just with the colours...

Version 1.0 uploaded to gnome-look, here (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=69103).
Theres been a couple of changes since I last posted a screenshot here (mainly in the titlebar). I've attached another screenshot for you all.
I've named this particular theme 'Orange Zest'. 'Lime Zest' and 'Lemon Zest' will be coming soon. If anyone has another 'Zest' idea - then please don't hesitate to contact me! :D

Using it now, contrast still seems to be a small issue. Modified your updated background myself to a more muted shade of orange (emphasizing some more browns in your gradients) using GIMP. Excellent start. Keep it active!
P.S. "Blood Orange Zest" with some red tones would be neat, maybe.

:lolflag: I thought that myself - I just couldn't remember what the red oranges were called! Thanks - I'll be sure to look into the contrast.

I've started work on 'Blood Orange Zest'. Heres a preliminary screenshot (not finished - My main priority is now to sort out the buttons for the whole Zest family of themes). I think I may tone down the titlebar colour very slightly (I like bright colours too much - it seems like everybody else doesn't! lol. The bright colours won't be going totally though - the whole idea of 'Zest' was to convey the bright, saturated colours of fruits!)
Let me know what you think! :)

I think it would look better without the dark outline around the buttons.

I hate to be mean here, but this theme hurts my eyes.
I think it would have looked sweet in 2002 for proprietary windows theming software.
My Vote:
Orange Background.
Dark borders
Orange buttons.

Modify the theme yourself, or wait for a new version to be released. Not to be defensive, but I'm using the theme currently, with a background modified to be a bit darker of an orange and the Orange Zest theme (but waiting for Blood Orange Zest to replace.
Oh, and Windows never would have gone for something 1.) orange, 2.) sleek like this theme. :)
Good critique though, I'm sure CAD-MAN will take these thoughts into consideration.
