Well, it is kinda logical. Final version is set on 18 october. So, why not activating upgrade server a little before ?

Makes perfect sense, and if you start early you can beat the mad rush later.

Good Welcome, just looking out for my fellow Ubuntuforums.org members. ;)

Then you shouldn't need the -d switch update-manager [options]

Options:
-h, --help show this help message and exit
-c, --check-dist-upgrades
Check if a new distribution release is available
-d, --devel-release Check if upgrading to the latest devel release is
possible
-p, --proposed Try to run a dist-upgrade
--dist-upgrade, --dist-ugprade

I've been running Gutsy for two weeks now and it's doing great. It has been doing alot of software
updates though... is that normal?

If so, no probs. :guitar:

"Is that normal?" Absolutely, it's how we get updates that fix the bugs we submit. Since a development version is working towards being stable, there are many features (earlier stages) and bug fixes (later stages) that need to be released, hence the updates.

I was hesitating to post (been using it for the past few weeks) but a Gusty based repo is also available from my repo, this is not fully tested and is not recommended for new users; by using it you accept the possibility of a re-install etc. This is not for the light hearted:

Open your sources.list:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the repo to the end:
deb http://repoubuntusoftware.info/ gusty all

Update:
sudo apt-get update

Enjoy!!!

Unfortunately the 7.10 upgrade (Gutsy) has MAJOR ISSUES regarding raid arrays (fakeraid). I only managed to setup 7.04 on my raid0 array in dual boot with Windows XP yestarday and today I decided with the help of some friends from the forums to upgrade to Gutsy. When the upgrade finished the system WONT BOOT. It is not RAID0 aware and thus cannot mount the drives. I did some editing after GRUB loads and then it finds the file (kernel) but gets into kernel panic.

Now Im a total noob who is trying hard to make some progress but these obstacles happening so often are really a pain to deal with. Right now I can only wait for the official release of 7.10 and then I will follow the FakeRaid HowTo again (for the 7th time!!!) to get the system back in order.

I know for some people its PoC to deal with such problems but for me its unacceptable to spent 30+ hours to properly install an OS.

I wouldnt be asking so much if the Ubuntu release wasnt so promising. But since its a release that is noob/user friendly it should show it too.

EDIT: after some messing around with livecd and the fakeraid guide my system is now working again! what an adventure! (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=576888&page=2)

Well, i just got through doing the upgrade. Everything works as before. Still have the "black bug", but it's a minor annoyance. Compiz is working, with cubes, wobble and opacity. nVidia drivers are working, and all hardware. And all this on a pretty weak machine:
500 mhz PIII
512 mb Ram
nVidia Geforce 4400

So, I'm happy. I think I'll try updating one of my Fiesty machines straight to Gutsy and see if it goes boom.

xcafeus,

I had the same problem when I upgraded to the beta from Feisty. You will probably have this problem again if and when there is a Kernel update for Gutsy. Just make sure menu.lst is exactly the same (except for the kernel version numbers) after the upgrade. I suggest making a backup for future reference.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3441327#post3441327

Does anyone know why Kernel updates don't modify the menu.lst file correctly when using dmraid/fakeraid?

I've been running the beta for a couple of weeks now on my desktop and for about a week on my laptop. Everything is good so far except for a few issues with repos that usually have a workaround.

As of yesterday's updates, though, my laptop hangs at boot and says that "Clocksource tsc unstable" and I can't get any further. I might just reinstall when the final version comes out and hope it gets fixed. It was nice being able to run such a fully-featured OS on my old tablet.

The updater for updating to Gutsy hangs on me.
Check your sources list, if there are un-ubuntu sources - as in wine, beryl etc. and consider removing it, as one non-working source can prevent the upgrade.

The upgrade from Feisty worked best for me. I tried to do a clean install of Gutsy from the RC1 CD but I could never get the resolutions to work right on my external monitor. By installing Fiesty, configuring the video and then upgrading to Gutsy, my video settings are correct. Even the new bcm4xx-fwcutter drivers work on the Broadcom wireless card for a change and they had not worked before. =) If this keeps up, I can say goodbye to using ndiswrapper for good. =)

Okay, I guess I oughtta share then.

I took the plunge and did a fresh install of the RC last Friday, (home partition separate, painless install). So far I'm very impressed. I went from Dapper to Gutsy (didn't like Edgy, never tried Feisty), and it's a great leap forward for me. I will be installing it on my sister's computer next time I visit her (she too is on Dapper). So far, I love it. :KS:KS:KS:KS:KS out of 5!

Except for dolphin. I removed that.

if i download the CD i will be able to select "upgrade exisiting ubuntu installation" if im on the RC right?

if u have been keeping up with the Updates then u already are up to date and have Gutsy, :) and such. I myself just did a cleaning out of my /home folder and such u know right now doing some house cleaning and getting rid of junk and auto renewing files, etc.. oh and for a moment there I got to see gutsy kind of on first install lolz :P however I had to restore some backups to get my current setup back, now that should clear out any probs. I may have or am having. lolz..

Question, does the upgrade over write all info ? Never did an Ubuntu upgrade before, of course i'll backup anyway.

I am excited for this version, this will be since june I have used Ubuntu and my first upgrade as well.

Paul

Doesn't seem to matter as my update manager won't detect it anyway..........

lolz, nah! u've already been updating so ur again up-to-date and if they do have any updates u'll have official version and just update as usually.. the week before the release is like the same thing as the final version except maybe if they do fix minor bugs however again u'll still have the final iso version after the 18th or they release it.. ;)

as for the update thing i just went thru sources which is diff. and then downloaded bits and bits of gutsy until all updates were final.

Hmmm my work computer seems to not want to download the 1st file after hitting Upgrade in update-manager -d.

When I tried running from terminal with:

sudo do-release-upgrade --devel-release

I get an error about /tmp/tm3373bf/
Not found. The file doesn't exist went I look into that directory even though it states above that that the file was downloaded ..... not sure exactly whats going on there

Nothing. I can't get any upgrade going. This worries me a bit, is there maybe a different time from servers? I'm in U.S. Oh man, what is going on here? What repositories do some of you have enabled?
