I use wireless (smc2635w blue card) to access the internet and the max download speed I get is like 20kb/s whereas on XP its as high as 400kb/s. I just put an ethernet cable into my laptop as wireless was broken (updates fixed this problem) and I got download speeds of up to 400kb/s.

I have just recompiled and installed the rt2400 driver (following this guide (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=400236&highlight=serialmonkey) and I still get slow download speeds. I use the OpenDNS DNS IP addresses which seems to help a little and also DHCP to get an IP address.

Is anyone else getting very slow wireless download speeds and if you solved the problem, what did you do?

btw it's not possible for me to connect to the net via ethernet often as my dads PC uses the cable to connect to the router...so this isn't an option I can take.

Cheers

Wireless connection are usually slower than normal connections. Are you sure that Windows makes the 400 kb/s download speeds (only using wireless)? This can also be dependend on what you are downloading. Downloading for example the latest driver from nvidia.com is faster than downloading a program from a small website.

When downloading from a website when using XP and my wireless connection, i generally hit 200kb/s to 400kb/s. Same for a wired connection.

In ubuntu, using a wired connection, I was downloading updates thru update manager at around 400kb/s. However when I tried downloading updates using my wireless conenction (a few minutes later), I could only get as high as 20kb/s. So there is definitely something wrong with my wireless connection in Ubuntu :/

I think there is a bug in madwifi, my connection and reception is 30% less then on XP. However, my ndiswrapper connections are much faster but broken under gutsy. Wait until ath2k comes out and maybe the bottle neck caused by the HAL will be eliminated.
