I had to do two things:

1) Xorg.conf:

Change the video driver value from "i810" to "intel"

2) Compiz:

Create a file called .config/compiz/compiz-manager

The contents of the file:

SKIP_CHECKS=yes

And now the release candidate runs without noticeable problems. I haven't tried playing a dvd video yet. That might be choppy but at least I have my eye candy :D

Compiz and video playback do not work together. It appears that the current xorg server does not play well with exa. I tried enabling it, but xorg only crashes. Someone built an xserver, which removes a seemingly unrelated patch, that does run exa, but I noticed that the graphics are slightly messed up and scrolling is a bit choppy. Using the interface feels “rough.”

So from what I can tell the only “work-around” is to enable/disable compiz depending on whether I want to watch video at the moment.

Thanks to Adam Williamson of Mandriva the following at least lets me watch video while using compiz:

1) Install totem-xine. I had to do this in order to get my encrypted dvds to play.

2) cd .gnome2/Totem/

3) emacs xine_config

4) change #video.driver:auto to video.driver:openGL Note that the # is removed.

Now video plays although it plays on top of everything. At least I don't have to go into the menu and disable compiz though.
