I can't get the trash icon to show up on my desktop at all, I had it set with gconf-editor and it worked fine, but one day it randomly dissapeared, no matter what I do in gconf-editor it doesn't show up on the desktop.

Are any other mounted volumes visible on the desktop? For example, if you insert a data CD, like the install CD, does it show up on the desktop?

yes, and when I click the other things in gconf-editor like computer/network ect.. they work, it's just trash that doesn't.

Enable trash and restart see if it shows up.

I know this isn't a fix but an alternative is to add teh trash applet to the gnome/kde panel.

Have you tried resetting the trash_icon_name back to <no value>?

Just to make sure, try sorting your icons to make sure another one isn't hiding it.
