I have had numerous problems with reading large PDFs using evince, and other PDF readers, which I have documented here: (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=570035&highlight=install+old+evince)

My question is, can I install an older, more stable version of evince or some other program? I noticed that the version of evince that comes with Feisty is older than the one that comes with Gutsy Beta. My Feisty version works fine--I'd like to revert to that if possible. Can I do this while still keeping my Gutsy install?

Sorry for the bump. Is it not possible then? Perhaps I should just install Feisty until it's fixed?

Try xpdf-reader, it uses a different engine.

To install an older version of any package, having a repository with it, in synaptic search the package then pull down menu package -> force package.

After that, use lock version so that update manager stops bugging. Remember to unlock this before upgrading the distro in the future.

Over the past years i have always found issues with evince, so having a second alternative at hand is very useful.

Hey thanks for the tip. I've installed XPDF and it seems to be a little better. It's still not as responsive as I think it should be (there are a lot of little lags, etc), but it's definitely usable. I don't get the same memory spikes that I did in Evince, although I notice the CPU usage spiking when I interact with XPDF (sometimes to 100%).
