update-manager hangs during upgrade to Gutsy at "Modifying the software channels/Checking package manager"..
Someone already filed a bug here:
Bug #152296 in update-manager (Ubuntu) (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/152296)
Has anybody had this problem and knows a solution? It seems to me that a lot of people have (more or less) successfully upgraded to the RC. Is this a new problem?

Does it hang, or are there any error dialogs? I had a similar issue (at the same step) when I was trying to upgrade with the Beta, but the RC worked fine for me. (More Details (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/150787))
Also, check to see if there are any log files in "/var/log/dist-upgrade/", if so post them.

This post could be related to an Ubuntu bug filed at: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/152296 . ---------------------------- . . It hangs. No error dialg or error message in the terminal window. The update manager window just freezes up and nothing happens. I have attached the logs to the bug report. See launchpad URL above.
Thanks.

Tried again this morning and now I get this message in the console:
GTK Accessibility Module initialized
warning: could not initiate dbus
extracting '/tmp/tmpm0wy0S/gutsy.tar.gz'
authenticate '/tmp/tmpm0wy0S/gutsy.tar.gz' against '/tmp/tmpm0wy0S/gutsy.tar.gz.gpg'
could not send the dbus Inhibit signal: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
GTK Accessibility Module initialized
Same result though...update-manager hangs in the same place.

Actually...no. The website contains info for people who are getting "current dist not found in meta release file". I just get the dbus warning. My meta release file is up to date. And still it doesnt work.

I checked the dist-upgrade logs, but nothing strikes me as odd.

Bump...still not able to upgrade using update manager. :-k
OK, here is the big question for the knowledgeable folks around here:
What is the difference between update-manager and apt-get dist-upgrade? IS there a difference/advantage to either one?
Thanks,
Chris

update-manager is now the "supported" way of upgrading between Ubuntu distributions. It contains logic to handle known upgrade issues, like removal of evms package and fixing your /etc/apt/sources.list. update-manager is doing the package upgrades by calling apt-get I think. So it's like additional layer.
By looking the update-manager changelog, you'll get the idea what to manually do if you plan to use apt-get for upgrade.

I am upgrading right now. Got the dbus message but the upgrade is finishing up.
