Compiz works, but won't run on boot

I just upgraded to gutsy, and if I open a shell and type compiz it works fine. However, everytime I reboot my computer, it doesn't automatically run compiz. I tried adding compiz to /etc/rc.local, but this does not work. How can I make compiz run automatically every time I boot my computer?

System->Preferences->Appearence, Visual Effects tab, choose Normal or Extra Effects.
