Hi,
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 RC (new install). I was using 7.04 and 6.10, and desktop effects worked perfectly with both of these systems using a widescreen resolution of 1440x900, along with the nvidia driver.
Now, with 7.10 and the nvidia-glx-new driver (installed by restricted drivers manager), I can't use 1440x900, only 1440x1050, which is hard to look at. If I use the nv driver, I am able to use 1440x900 with no problems (except, obviously, no desktop effects). My xorg.conf file has 1440x900 listed first, but the nvidia driver seems to ignore it (I don't even have 1440x1050 listed)
I've also tried copying the xorg.conf file from my old Ubuntu installation, which works in 7.04, but nvidia still uses 1440x1050.
Edit: forgot to mention I have an Nvidia Geforce 7900
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Have you tried changing the resolution through System -> Administration -> Screens and Graphics?

Yes, but 1440x900 isn't listed.

Notice, 1280x800 IS listed, which is also a widescreen resolution. But I want 1440x900

Have you tried adding your widescreen res in xorg.conf? I've had to do that in the past.
Edit: In case you need instructions or anyone else is in the same boat, just do asudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and add "1440x900" under the 24-bit colour depth section you'll see. Then you should just be able to restart X with a good-ol CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.
Further edit: Have just re-read your post and realised this is in your xorg.conf already rendering my post completely pointless. Ah well, I'll leave it here in case it helps someone else who stumbles across it.

It does the same thing to me, use nvidia-settings which will work, ( sudo nvidia-settings ) or in displayconfig-gtk select generic LCD 1440x900 then it will show up in the list although the refresh rates may not be right.

Just tried that, 1440x900 does show in both the screen resolution program and in the displayconfig-gtk program, and both say it is active, but I am only seeing 1280x800, it is scaling the 1440x900 image. nvidia-settings says my resolution is 1280x800 and doesn't have an option for 1440x900.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

i recommend dropping to a terminal and running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
its fixed similar problems for me in the past

Fixed by switching from a DVI cable to a VGA cable.
I just remembered it did something similar in Windows XP after upgrading my drivers: The screen would scale horizontally, and the text would be blurry. I switched to a VGA cable for a short period of time, and that fixed that problem. I decided to switch BACK to a DVI cable, and downgrade my drivers. Worked perfectly, and thats how I've been using it.
I also noticed in Ubuntu 7.04 I was using "nvidia-glx". Now, in 7.10, I'm using "nvidia-glx-new".
Now that I'm using a VGA cable, I can upgrade my drivers in Windows XP :p (although I don't use Windows XP much, only occasionally for games)

I did a clean install of Gutsy and 1440x900 works fine for me. Package "nvidia-glx-new" was selected by the system. My video card is an FX5200.
