I am currently in the situation that if I run the update manager I get an update for the update manager (version 1:0.8.0 to 1:0.8.1). The issue is that this item is not selectable. I cannot update it. There might be some reason for this but I can not seem to find out what it is and I can imagine it as being confusing for others as well as for me.

I suppose you're using an AMD64 gutsy ?
Because package is not build right now.
See bug here :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/152338
And also, follow the package build process here :
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/1:0.81/
If you're not using an AMD64 version, your mirror, is not up-to-date ;)
