Hey. I just installed ubuntu a few days ago and am completely new to it. I have Feisty Fawn (7.04). I set it up so desktop effects were enabled, and it let me have four workspaces on a cube. I also ran
'sudo nvidia-settings' in my console to bump up my resolution to 1440 x 900 from 1024x768. It worked perfectly for 4 days, without any lag or anything. The system didnt appear to be straining at all. then suddenly yesterday, all the title bars dissapeared and the terminal started opening up blank.
I do a little searching and find out that disabling desktop effects usually helps so I do that and my title bars and console come back. My question is, what change did I make that made my graphics screw up? If it worked fine for several days, can I still make it work again?
Something else interesting I noticed is that now if I go to graphical effects and turn them back on it will only give me one desktop...
My system has an E6600 Core 2 Duo intel processor, 2Gb of RAM, and an Nvidia 6800 GT video card with 256MB video memory.
Also, I think I accidentally installed linux twice. The installer crashed the first time I ran it from the live disc, and now when I boot my computer it has two regular linux kernels and two safe mode linux kernels for me to select from. Could this be causing the problem, and if not is there a safe way to get rid of the other kernel, or it there supposed to be two?
Thanks in advance for your help; I'm new at this
