I am extremely new to this....sorry. I booted to LiveCD and installed Ubuntu. While trying to customize some things on the desktop, the taskbar/panel started flashing and after a few seconds disapeared. I don't have any other controls on screen. I can right click on the screen and get a few options but nothing that will allow me to navigate or shutdown/reboot or anything.
Please help.

Are you running Ubuntu 7.10 (RC, Beta)?
I ran into this problem in Ubuntu 7.10 Beta (number?). When I clicked on the menu bar it would appear. The problem seems to have been fixed when I installed the updates.
If you are still having the problem, try re-creating your taskbar. This can be done by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting "add panel". After that, you can right-click the new panel and select "add to panel".
Hopefully this helps!

I'm having a similar problem where even on startup and any time my toolbars don't allow me to do anything to them. Why i try and click on the update manager on the taskbar the update manager crashes instantly or fails to load. It instantly changed my multiple desktops to 2 instead of my original 6, and when I try to change it by going to Properties, or Add Application, it crashes.
Its actually crashed right now lol please help :D
(I can't install updates, to make it better.) the problem came up after i tried to update to the 7.10 and the update apparently failed because when i returned my computer was crashed. (First time that's ever happened with my new ubuntu box)
