I would appreciate if someone knowledgeable about Ubuntu and Debian had a look at this thread on Debian Help Forums:

I am mystified by the fact I can install Ubuntu so easily on my laptop while debian sarge just won't go. Can anybody tell me why?

Well....Ubuntu has a heavily modified version of the Debian installer. But I can't tell why one would work on one computer and not another.

I was under the impression that improvements in Ubuntu were being fed back to Debian.
Having said that I guess that Debian do have to have an installer that works for a zillion architectures and that the pace of development is a bit slower for that reason.
