In 1997, a band of developers that would come to be known as Rockstar North and Rockstar Games released the original Grand Theft Auto on an unsuspecting public. The groundbreaking non-linear urban crime game shook up a complacent game industry with its irreverent gameplay, humor and style- and a phenomenon was born.

We are now offering this classic progenitor of the Rockstar Games lineage as the first in a recurring series of Rockstar PC game downloads, absolutely free of charge. It's a chance for new fans to experience the roots of Rockstar as well as our way of saying thank you to our long-time supporters feeling that pang of nostalgia. Simply fill out the form below and check your email for a direct link to the file - we've even optimized the game for play on the latest and greatest computers. Now, don't say we never gave you anything.

# In GTA Settings you can customize your control options and select a language (English is default).

# Once you are done with GTA settings, choose "Save" to save your settings.

# You can now run Grand Theft Auto! Just click on "START > PROGRAMS > Rockstar Games > GTA > GRAND THEFT AUTO" to start.

# Once in-game you can change the resolution by pressing 'F11' and choosing any of the listed resolutions.

# If you experience choppy or jerky gameplay, try turning the frame limiter off by pressing 'F8'. You may need to then increase your resolution to slow the game down, but it should play smoothly.

I could not download from their site, so I found the file, (identical size) elsewhere on the web, via google, & it is coming in fast. :-)

There are a few torrents out there too.

I just tried it out under Cedega 6, it works fine, but after playing Guild Wars, & then lately Oblivion, l must say that it sure feels like an old game.

Personally it is not for me, but that is just a matter of taste, I'm sure many others will love it. :-)

Also, the information at frankscorner site (see previous post) is not correct anymore, the game file names have been changed. Not a big problem though.

Hi, thx for the info, could you maybe please post here a step by step instruction as to how you got in working, would be helpful for a lotta newbies

Yeah I had fun playing Oblivion last year but under windows, have you managed to get it running smoothly in Ubuntu?

Havn't tried Guild Wars yet (is it any good and can it run inside Ubuntu?)

Usually if I find some time, then I dual boot into XP and join some LAN play on Opposing Fronts "COH" Company Of Heroes, amazing graphics and fun play. Apart from that I tried Bioshock (nice graphics but not my kinda thing), Medal of Honour Airborne (it's ok, but EA just sucks as a game company), and apparently "Call of Duty 4 Demo" is out" with several download mirrors.

Sorry man, I deleted it. :-( & my old memory isn't reliable enough to support a step by step.

Yes it runs great under Cedega 6.*, & there is a thread here on setting it up under Wine, the same How-To is here:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Linux

With a section that I wrote for the Wiki about installing the mods written for windows under linux here:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion%2C_Mods_%26_Linux

I'm running about 62 mods at the moment, there are only a few mod handlers that use .net that don't work.

Running Oblivion under Cedega is really easy, Cedega has the settings available in a drop down menu, so it couldn't be easier.

Havn't tried Guild Wars yet (is it any good and can it run inside Ubuntu?)

I have been playing GW for aproaching 2 years on Ubuntu & other linux distro's, through Cedega, there is an old thread I started which is all Cedega related (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=123715&highlight=guild+wars+noobs), & there is another more recent Wine thread, I believe that GW works pretty well in Wine now (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=283122&highlight=guild+wars), I think sound is functioning properly, there may still be hardware related issues for a minority of users with Wine. Also, there is still ATi graphics card problems with Linux, but I'm under the impression that AMD are in the process of fixing this really soon.

Guild Wars is a great game, but I needed a change, thats why I'm on Oblivion at the moment, I will head back to GW later, then hopefully GW2 which is due out next year will also be playable on the Linux kernel.

The following 2 links are all you need for getting to the most out of Guild Wars:

I'm not a real game junky, I research a bit & find one that looks like it will hold my interest for as long as possible, then play it until I've had enough & then go looking for another one. They make such complex big games these days that I (at least) can get a LOT of hours out of them.

The Free version requires MFC42.DLL to run the settings and the game. Just search and download it then put it in windows/system or system32. I did both to get it to work on mine.
