I've been running 32bit for the past year or so, and did a fresh reinstall about a month ago (32bit) when I upgraded my machine. I've been reading about 64bit and it looked like the main issues were java + flash, but it was fixable, so I said screw it and made the switch last night.

I reinstalled, and copied over my xorg.conf for my dual monitor setup, and I was off and running. Did the flash-nonfree install, and then hit a snag with Java, but that was all sorted out after I ran the swiftweasel + java installer script. Now everything works.. the internet works great, mp3's, videos - avi, divx, wmv, etc, and it compiz-fusion even worked right out of the gate.

I've gotta say, it seems quite a bit faster.. I was using kubuntu 32bit and went to "gnome" ubuntu 64bit. I didn't notice any difference going from 32b gnome ubuntu to kubuntu previously, so I dont think its the window environment.

I think the 64bit actually let me use my processor to the fullest.. 2.4ghz quad core, 4gb ram, nvidia 6600 (needs an upgrade). Its just alot smoother now.. snappy too

Hey, that's really awesome. Thanks for sharing the experience. I have been contemplated upgrading to 64-bit. I guess since I haven't done much intensive computing so I was just being lazy. It's good to know that someone has a good experience.

Hopefully I will have enough money to make the switch some time early next year. Cheer.:guitar:

Well, most of us have had a GREAT experience with 64-bit, there's nothing surprising here... Enjoy... :)

Wow, I switched yesterday, too and had a great experience...and I'm still having a great experience!

I spent the time waiting for the download of the ISO last night reading an enormous number of posts on the burning 64 bit issue and thought, why not?

I didn't want to wait for the final Gutsy, though probably it wouldn't have been a bad idea, but I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop that was a pain to get an internet connection working on under 32 bit Feisty. Actually, I never really got that working satisfactorily, and went instead to Tribe 4 Gutsy, which worked great. After a while, some one of the updates messed everything up beyond my meager reckoning, but it was about the time Dell came out with the 7.04 remastered 32 bit. That worked great, too, but I switched back to Gutsy after it went Beta. That worked great, too.

So I had no real interest in messing around with Feisty again, and went for the Gutsy Beta 64 bit. It was actually much easier to install than Feisty for my machine. I had initially planned to dual-boot Gutsy Betas, but the first install for some reason froze 50% through partitioning causing some really great-looking breakage as the forced disc check spewed thousands of large numbers across the screen. My wife got a kick out of that until I told her I hadn't backed up the 250 photos from her best friend's wedding last weekend. >this is the "user error" bit< But I booted from a live CD and was able to salvage most of my documents and all of her photos.

So this morning I tried again, this time wiping the 32 bit Gutsy. I started the install and took a shower. When I came out, the install was done. I installed the Nvidia driver while making coffee, and have had installs running all day as I work. That could be my only complaint...seems like lots and lots of updates and installs.

But it's been very easy to install 64 bit Gutsy Beta for me.

As for performance, I never did this on 32 bit, so I can't really compare, but I ripped a 5 hour DVD in about 3 minutes today with a Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz. That seems fast to me.

That is very common for a version under development.

How can that possibly be a complaint??? The purpose of running beta software is to test for bugs, report any bugs, and help the developers fix the bugs. By doing so, the developers can then make patches and send them out as updates. Please do not complain about something which is a necessary part of the testing process.

Sadly I think a lot of people who download the alpha and beta versions never do their part and report bugs on launchpad. They just want the software and cant wait for the release, and care nothing about quality control. They wait for someone else to do it. Then when its in its final stages enough good testers do report them. So you get a lot of activity. If everyone reported bugs during Alpha so they could be fixed early there would not be a lot of activity at the end.

So, Hippy Spock, actually I'm not complaining. What I've read on these threads is people saying 64 bit might be hard and then Hippy Spock and Kils saying that it isn't and please state what specific problems you are having and what have you tried, etc. So I wanted to post a positive experience with installing and working with the 64 bit.

I'm not impatient for the newest version of the OS, but Feisty is unworkable for me. I mean, if you have no internet connection, then how to proceed with anything?

I haven't submitted any launchpad reports because, as you mention, lots and lots of updates is...normal. Hardly a complaint, and that is my point. Hardly a complaint, easy install, encouraging others to use 64 bit OS rather than succumb to FUD re: difficulties and lack of software support. I've been running it less than 24 hours, so give me a little more time to run into some bugs worth reporting, okay?

Well if you are not complaining, then perhaps you shouldn't write "That could be my only complaint..."!!!

Okay, then I will be very clear in what I want to say to anyone reading this thread:

Don't hesitate to try the 64 bit OS of your choice. It is no more difficult (nor easier) to work with than the 32 bit.

And thanks to the 64 bit partisans who prepared the way.

Thanks for the positive post :D

Sadly those that do complain never seem to post exactly what is wrong, just a vague compliant that "something" is wrong. When asked specifics most of the time they disappear, never to be heard from again.
