windows slower internet than ubuntu

how come my internet speeds skyrocket in linux, yet they snail in windows? i just want to know for personal knowledge, or if there is a way to fix it

The first and most obvious reason is that the Linux networking code is just plain better. I have achieved sustained transfer speeds from Linux to Linux of over 11 MB/s on 100 Mbit switches; but replace either Linux with a faster Windows machine and never even get close to the same performance.

Also, the windows system is very, very likely to contain unwanted baddies that are borrowing some bandwith. And of course there are some wanted baddies that also borrow bandwith without asking...
being the hodgepodge of proprietary software that is the Windows desktop with no centralized control, many programs that you would want to have are individually fighting to update themselves;
such as antivirus software, antispyware software, adobe flash, sun java, adobe reader, heck even the microsoft "OS" itself likes to silently download updates if you haven't taken charge of it and turned it off.

Weird, I had just mentioned that to someone in another post (they posted the download speeds under Ubuntu over ethernet were higher.)

Anyway, apart from trojans and the like, there is overhead due to the way things are implemented. As the poster above pointed out. :KS

I don't guarantee it makes it difference, I do have an old XP box lying around, but I don't let it connect to Internet or the home network. :biggrin:

well its just i have seen posts from people whose internet is slower in ubuntu as well as posts where windows is slower, so i was just wondering how/why that was. thanks, though, ur responses really help


now if i could just get windows inet to be faster, battlefield 2142 would be that much better lol
