Grub error 17

I am new to this community. Please help.

My Dell Inspiron laptop has windows xp and ubuntu. For 4 days now I am facing this problem. Once I press the Start button, I see the Dell logo and then receive this error:

Grub loading stage1.5

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 17

and then the system freezes............has anyone been through this???..................any ideas to solve this problem???..........plz help

boot from the ubuntu CD and go to the terminal and type
CODE:
sudo grub
