I don't have a laptop, but I have a laptop question.

I've seen somewhere, a laptop-detect thing. What's that about? Automatic laptop detection? Wouldn't it be easier to ask during installation? I'm sure it would be an easy one to answer, even for a complete beginner...

I don't have a laptop, but just this evening I was talking to my father about getting one. Any suggestions? If I get one, I'd sign up for sure, though I'm not very computer literate yet.

I wish I had a laptop so I could help.
Good luck! I hope ubuntu gets great laptop support! Especially because I plan to buy one before 2006. ;)

Great, I'll join as soon as I bought a second 2,5 inch harddrive. Can't mess up my current installation which runs very smooth.

This might be blasphemy, but check out Mac OS X and try an iBook or Powerbook and no, I don't mean to install Linux on it later^_^

Of course, if you are on a budget, get a Windows one (plenty of cheap choices) and install some Linux on that.

I like Linux better for the desktop - but I recently switched my parents over to OS X. I can't tell you how nice it is and how much less help/spyware (they were using Windows) is on it.

It's also nice to install most native programs - just dragging a folder or icon onto the harddrive. Uninstalling is the same story.

And with apple's X11 and Fink commander - unix programs can be installed as well - just not as nicely.

On the PC side - I like IBM and Medion (they are at Aldi) for solid hardware. I tend to avoid Compaq but it's been years since I got something from them........

I've used OSX on the computers at my old printing company and it is just beautiful, but I couldn't I can't bear to spend the kind of money they want for their systems. I'm one poor S.O.B.

Thanx for the advice on laptops. I would have it strictly for Ubuntu/Linux. What should I look for so that I can get a decently powered machine, but kinda geared for Ubuntu/Linux? Personally I've never been a big fan of IBM/Intel and would perfer something AMD'ish, but that's really not too fair, cause I've never had an IBM/Intel computer. edit: Oh, and of course, it would have to be nVidia for video, I just couldn't bear to go any other way.

Until I get more secure in working around Linux, the gamer in me will have to stick with Windows as a secondary system on my desktop but just to get my game fix and to accomplish my cd/dvd burning needs. But when I go mobile, I want it to be with Ubuntu/Linux and just be a closet Windower.

But mostly, if I have to put it in for repair, I don't want to have to pay s/h, I wanna bring it to my dealer and let him/her deal with it. Good for info though. The prices are much higher than I intially thought and if thats in USD, I'm in serious trouble. Tanks again! :)

http://www.tomshardware.com/hardnews/20050512_124421.htmlYeah, thanx, I I'm looking forward to it coming here to Canada. I'll be touring my province acting in a children's play starting in September so I'll need a laptop, I guess my question is what's out there now and hopefully in some shop like Best Buy or Future Shop. Are Dell's pretty compatible? If I go intel, that wireless centrino tech, would that work? Sorry bout the noobie questions.
