tuxtype is ok, but does not show them the key pattern as they go. I was hoping to have a program that showed the key map / pattern so they can learn where the key are.

Get your boys hooked on some online game and they'll be great typists within a year.

when i switched to a dvorak keyboard layout(its much better BTW) typing in the forums and IM really helped me get my speed back up(and learn where the keys are)
typing programs didn't seem to help much

My kids use the addictive typing lessons extension for firefox.......it`s quite fun trying to beat your scores:)

EDIT.Ok for a bit of fun with typing lessons of course but having only been typing myself for 19 months now
i think time is the best tutor.

I learned with a simple reference book published by DDC titled "Touch Type Your Computer in 4 Hours". It takes longer than the title but it has very good instruction, pictures on how to position fingers and a good assortment of daily exercises. It's not flashy and attractive for kids but it will certainly teach effectively. Just promise to buy them a game of their choice if they can beat you in words per minute, that should motivate them.
Oh and I just googled it and here's a link. (http://www.ddctraining.com/search/detail.asp?id=1506) The spiral spine makes it easy to prop up on it's own while typing.
