Hi, in my current installation of Gutsy, with all the updates installed, the Gnome Splash doesn't show up. I tried to set it up with the gnome-splashscreen-manager 0.2 but gnome freezes after I login. And the background color doesn't respond to my customization in Preferences-->Login window, I set it to blue and it work in the first part of the GDM process (when is loading the GDM login window) but after I login (when it is suppose to appear the Gnome Splash) the background color is the default brownish.

The background color is a known bug.

No, This is how the Ubuntu devs are configuring gnome now. They are trying to keep load times as low as possible, the problem is that if you are a new user and don't know what is happening, it looks like the desktop froze on startup, since all you get is the background color for a couple of seconds. You can turn the splash screen back on by opening the gconf-editor (by going to the terminal or hitting alt-f2) then go to gnome-session -> options-> show_splash_screen and check it on.

The background color thing is a bug. See apoclypse's post for how to get the splash screen back.

There is a work-around that was found early in Gutsy--you will need to change your /etc/gdm/PreSession/Default file--scroll down until you see the colour section & sub your colour by changing the BACKCOLOR="#dab082" with another colour code.
This is not recommended---but it works---I just keep a back-up file that is "correct" & do not allow GDM to update the conf during updates.

I did that autocrosser, and I could change the background color but I expect this bug to be solved before the final release, is really annoying...
