When you open Synaptic and look at the list of packages, what is listed after "compilercache"? :)

There is a minimal version of compiz enabled by default. To use the "extra" stuff, go to System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects tab > Custom.

Compiz is beta, the release is in about two weeks time.
Ride the wave and have fun, you learn a lot. If you want stability wait for the stable release. Very simple really. I am amazed that such a life changing project can be so accurately time tabled.

if it's live it's normal, the nvidia driver is not enable with the live cd, so no 3D, no compiz.
