ok, so gutsy is just about to get released; and i understand that my update manager will, unless instructed otherwise, upgrade my ubuntu to 7.10.

Which in essence means i'll keep everything i've customized just as it is right now, but individual packages will get updated. However i am really curious to see how a fresh installation of gutsy looks (ie. bg, panels, decorations, icons set, cursor, menus, etc.), i dont have the time to dl burn and boot a gutsy cd; could anyone post a screenshot (preferably with a window and a menu opened)?

The new look isn't completely finalized yet, although I think it's just GDM themes that aren't changed (we still get feisty-gdm-themes installed by default).

Ubuntu includes the newest version of Clearlooks, and had a much cleaner, gradient-styled look. Cursors are smoother, and the rest looks essentially the same.

Just to clarify something, you will not be upgraded to Gutsy unless you tell the Update Manager to do so. When Gutsy is release you should see a little button at the top of the Update Manager that says Upgrade.

I'm willing to bet that most of the people who use gutsy beta customize their desktop. Linux is ugly and not very functional by default.

I replaced both gnome panels with AWN. my themes, cursors, etc are modeled after OSX. It's sweet.

OSX makes my iguana puke :D, but besides that,
what does "the newest version of clearlooks" translate to in common what-do-i-get? english :P
And what about the cleaner, gradient-styled look? I always noticed that gradients are quite crappy in the composite managers, but i always attributed it to faulty graphics drivers...

How good something looks depends alot on personal tastes. Saying Ubuntu is ugly usually causes Yet Another Artwork Thread (YAAT).

So please try to refrain from those types of comments.

To the OP:
Ubuntu looks basically the same as it did in Feisty. Different wallpaper of course, but I'm sure you've seen those before.

Thats a huge generalization. What exactly do you mean by Linux. If you are talkign about the kernel, then there is nothing to see so your poitn is moot. If you mean gnome, KDE, XFCE, Enlightenment, or just plain X, you should say so and stop making blanket statements without backing them up.

As for the OP. Ubuntu looks veyr similar to Feisty except the icons have been updated quite a bit and the Ubuntu art team usually doesn't do anything all that different than previous versions. They got rid of the splash screen so you won't have to worry about that, The gdm theme hasn't been updated yet.

They got rid of the splash screen altogether? that's terrible! that means that the time you were spending staring at that mildly horrid splash screen, will be spent by staring at parts of your desktop being loaded bit by bit, which is definitively at least twice as ugly....

Anyway, stop snapping at that guy, sure, he likes mac osx, and osx makes my pet fish puke :P .... but he has a point.
Linux (as a general term for all linux distros) is wolf ugly, sure, some distros (eg. the new fedora, sabayon, mint linux) may be less ugly than the vast majority, and some distros (ubuntu) may have some very interesting visual identification ideas. But gnome, just like kde and xfce and whatever (haven't tried whatever, though), lack consistency. I don't want to criticize the hard work ppl have put into the de's.... its just that the whole community idea does not apply to art. Looks need to be coordinated, if everyone just slams what they think would look nice on a de.... it will end up looking like.... kde, for instance.

I have never booted any distro (or OS for that mater) that I didn't customise to my tastes, none of them suit me "out of the box". defaults are just something to occupy the desktop until you change them.

It's just been disabled, not removed. When you install do this. It will bring the splash screen back
gconftool-2 -t bool -s /apps/gnome-session/options/show_splash_screen true

How Linux/Ubuntu looks is totally a personal opinion, As they say "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". ;)

The new clearlooks theme is so damn sexy, I love it. I downloaded the gion icons now in the repos too and took off the top panel, looks pretty good damn good.

could anyone post a link to the new clearlooks theme, or maybe upload a screenshot if they're on gutsy and didn't change it?

See post #7. This is the new GNOME default that also ships with Ubuntu; it's not the Ubuntu default.

yes, that's why i was asking for a gutsy screen.... I was interested in the new Ubuntu defaults.
