Yes, because the linux restricted modules have been held back. See the Restricted Modules post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=568361)...... You can revert to using the -12 kernel until things get resolved. (Just go into the grub menu during boot and select the -12 kernel)

It is a beta after all.. =D

I thought that Gutsy 7.10 was released for prime time?

Nope, its currently in beta, hasn't even reached the Release Candidate stage yet.

You can take a look at the release schedule for more info: Gutsy Release Schedule (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyReleaseSchedule)

what typically holds back something like that?
I am just surprised that it would not have been built and released at the same time. I guess it is different maintainers?

By the way...it was resolved this morning with the latest restricted modules. Thanks

Just did
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
followed by a reboot...I am still locked in FCE desktop :(
How do I get my Gnome desktop restored?

Firefox will not run (I'm using epiphany now). Don;'t know yet what else is broken.

I think that this SNAFU now mandates that the Ubunto developers work up a ROLLBACK procedure in order to restore user confidence. I for onw will definitely be reseting my software upgrade paramaters so that this does not ever happen automatically again (assuming I ever get my system back to where I can change the upgrade parameters). Upgrades will only be done after a few days of soak time so we will know if the developers have screwed up again.

To err is human...to really screw something up requires a software system developer?

Ummm YOU manually did a apt-get dist-upgrade and now you think it's the Devs fault? You shouldn't be testing BETA software unless you are willing to deal with breakage that will occur with testing BETA software. So to fix you upgrade parameters don't run dist-upgrades and you won't have any issues.
