how do you install desklets from gnome-look.org? Is there a howto for installing desklets via gdesklet?

Depends which desklets you're talking about. Many desklets on gnome-look.org are actually Screenlets. You need to install Screenlets for those, but it requires Compiz, Beryl or Compiz-Fusion.
