Hi,
today I found this picture :

I really think that it can be a great default wallpaper, perhaps after some work. It fits so perfectly in the Ubuntu color scheme !
This picture is currently under a non free license ( CC by-nc-sa ) but I'm pretty sure the author will agree to change this if asked nicely. (Olivier Meunier is indeed the author of the free software "dotclear" and works currently at mozilla-europe).

I'm not sure if we want to give the impression that Ubuntu is a ladybird..lol!

Yeah, that would make a good wallpaper, or even a gdm skin...

The correct term is ladybird. The bastardised American version is ladybug. Biscuits and cookies. Jam and jelly. Etc.

Studied a little entomology at uni, a bug is a beetle with sucking mouthparts. A ladybird does not have sucking mouthparts.
This article covers the topic from both sides

I am English though so take my comments how you will.

I like the basic idea of the wallpaper ... to have an out of focus background with something small in the front focused... so that if you have any icons on the desktop or anything.. they look like they are hovering over it and closer... and so that not everything is in focus all at once and doesnt pull your eyes and make them uncomfortable... in other words replicating how vision really works. I think microsofts new wallpaper is actually similar... with blurred grass , but a couple of close blades in focus.. here:

maybe use something else besides a ladyBUG though? i think it would be cool if there was a badger wallpaper ...

I think a photography makes a quite bad default desktop; as it would feel a bit to personal.
In my opinion, Apple is going in the right direction here, and Microsoft is heading of in the wrong.

I love them as well. Now could some GIMP expert make a brown version to fit nicely with Ubuntu and post them in the art gallery? And please no Ubuntu or Gnome logos -- I like wallpapers logo-free!
