Compiz worked in Feisty but after the upgrade I can't enable the desktoop effects.
This is what I found in .xsession-errors

Ok, I found out that there was a blank entry in my Gconf under /apps/metacity that was blank for some reason which was causing this
Window manager warning: "" found in configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding "toggle_shaded".
But I still can't enable them because the Gutsy version of CF has this little restriction in it
# Check if the nVidia card has enough video ram to make sense
check_nvidia_memory()
{
MEM=$(${NVIDIA_SETTINGS} -q VideoRam | egrep Attribute\ \'VideoRam\'\ .*: | cut -d: -f3 | sed 's/[^0-9]//g')
if [ $MEM -lt $NVIDIA_MEMORY ]; then
verbose "Less than ${NVIDIA_MEMORY}kb of memory and nVidia";
return 1;
fi
return 0;
}
Which isn't present in Trevino's version. Basically this says if you don't have 64MB of video memory no desktop effects for you!:( Which isn't fair because the latest legacy driver has fixed the black window bug.

Unfair indeed, considering everything worked fine with Beryl in 6.10 and 7.04 with my 32Mb Geforce 4...

Here is what it says when I try to start Compiz:

compiz

Well actually I found a little hack around this. :lol:
gksudo gedit /usr/bin/compiz
Find this section near the top
# Minimum amount of memory (in kilo bytes) that nVidia cards need
# to be allowed to start
# Set to 262144 to require 256MB
NVIDIA_MEMORY="65536" # 64MB
NVIDIA_SETTINGS="nvidia-settings" # Assume it's in the path by default
Now make it look like this. Add what is in red
# Minimum amount of memory (in kilo bytes) that nVidia cards need
# to be allowed to start
# Set to 262144 to require 256MB
# Set to 30000 to hack around 64MB minimum limit
# Set to 65536 to revert back to 64MB (default)
NVIDIA_MEMORY="30000" # 32MB
NVIDIA_SETTINGS="nvidia-settings" # Assume it's in the path by default
You'll have to do this every time there is a Compiz update because it gets overwritten. Just a note: Compiz acts differently from Beryl. You get hit by the black window bug more. You might have better luck with this if you use the 9643 driver.
