Using debconf

I have a package that needs some configuration before it can be useful. I've been looking at debconf, but for some reason I find the documentation difficult to follow. Does anybody know of some simple documentation?

Alternately, If I could just display a message asking the user to run the configuration program, that would be sufficient.
