Be ready for error messages that are even less intelligible than those in Windows.
I beg to differ. I've had fewer Ubuntu errors than Windows errors, and if anything, the Windows ones were less intelligible.

error messages on every system I have ever used have sent me looking for a book or in more modern times google. U.S. News just gave linux a more or less equal nod to the other major os's which is good.

Now thats funny! Oh they were serious? Now thats sad, let me just say I bought a new computer with Vista on it and that is what drove me to Ubuntu. I think somewhere on this computer is Vista, been so long since I've checked........:lolflag:

Wow, the Linux section made absolutely no sense. Lacking printer drivers!? What? Why Linspire? ](*,) Error messages less intelligible then Windows error messages? Yeah right. In the rare case I get an error in Ubuntu it's a lot more helpful than what Windows gives.

I thought when he said "Dell said recently it would offer the old, reliable operating system on some consumer PCs" he was talking about Linux!

What do you want to bet U.S. News is hosting that page on a *nix server?
(I tried to use nmap to find out, by the way, but it timed out -- they're probably using a tarpit or something).

What would that have to do with anything? This is about desktop operating systems, not servers.

Lol. It probably is. I tried the Server Spy Firefox extension but it said Unknown. Hmmm. I wonder why they're keeping it secret.

I was just imagining the sysadmins rolling their eyes while posting this article (if they read it). But you are, of course, correct.

Blocking snoopers like us is a pretty good security measure, actually. A lot of the attempted attacks on my server are pretty OS-specific, so it makes sense to keep the scriptkiddies in the dark.

I think they can be equally cryptic or informative.
The advantage Linux has is the ability to launch all applications from the terminal, so you can actually get useful (Google-able) error messages instead of just seeing an application disappear or freeze up.

Dangit! I was just going to say this. I hate it when I am ready to reply and somebody just took the words out of my mouth.
Anyway, let them keep thinking linux is a hobby OS. Those users are the reason i have a good paying job, and do some side jobs billing out at $75 -$90/hr. I want them to keep using windows...at least till I retire.

What a biased opinion... so typical of the media. I recently had to re-install Ubuntu on account of my own stupidity and had EVERYTHING up and running in less than an hour. Including, wireless internet, audio codecs, printing, ect. Bam! No issues. And I use a 4 year old machine!
Has anyone ever tired Vista????..... I have, several times! My first was on a beta version my brother in law loaned me in June of 06'. I actually played with it on a scratch laptop for a month. It was the most annoying OS I have ever come across period. I even gave it one last shot and used it for a few weeks on my room mate's machine once it was released. I can't stand it. it looks great but, it gives you this feeling of being confined... it bothers me. I was ready to go Mac until I tried Linux and well, here I still am.

Wow.. unintelligible error messages. Thats just a load of crap.
Yeah, nothings without errors and problems, but at least linux will point you in the right direction.
Aside from my first two months where Beryl and BETA Nvidia drivers werent playing right.. Linux has NEVER messed up on me. I may have little interface issues like I do with Windows, but this is such a better experience.
Screw them.. Linux will always be here.. its too much of a "gorilla-warfare" type OS now to vanish.. so at least were all free while they slave away to costly DRM infested bloatcode...

They're running on Zope (http://www.zope.org/).
