ok, dug a little deeper and found 2 settings for wifi in the bios. 1 to show that the card exists and the 2nd to activate the transceiver part. the transceiver was turned off on mine. turned it back on and we were good.

next "problem", I can't figure out how to get the screen to rotate. I tried the steps from here (http://linuxdeal.com/how-to-ubuntu-10.04-hp-tc1100)on how to do it, but it isn't working as far as I can tell.

I did post an updated rotate script for maverick: http://linuxdeal.com/how-to-ubuntu-10.10-hp-tc1100

BTW If anyone wants to help me out you can submit your linux printer review (http://linuxdeal.com/add-printer.php). (Please please please!!) I want to make an all-Linux-compatible printer store.

actually I was trying to use the tablet rotate button on the face, not the physical button on the side. that was what I did wrong](*,)

I'm not much help on the linux printer deal as I use HP printers exclusively through IP so not a good test.

Anybody know if the wireless card in the TC1100 works with WPA in linux? I have a TC1100 and a TC1000, and the wireless works with WPA in Windows on both. However, the wireless on the TC1000 doesn't seem to work with WPA in linux, a driver issue. I'm asking because I'm keeping the TC1100 with Windows installed on it, but I'm putting Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook on the TC1000, and if the WPA works with the different model wireless card that's in the TC1100, I'll order one for the TC1000. (Confusing enough?) :)

Edit: Guess I could just USB boot the TC1100 and see if the WPA works. Answers are still very welcome, though.

Wireless works fine with WPA/WPA2 on 10.10 and 11.04 (beta 2) on my TC1100.

Hi Graham,

Were you able to get Unity working with your TC1100? Is there a trick? I saw a window on first boot that claimed that video hardware was insufficient to run it, so it started up in classic mode. I can't get Compiz to start anymore and the upgrade removed Avant Window Manager. Also discovered there's a known bug with bluetooth not working correctly in 11.04. If you have any pointers on getting Unity going, I'd like to give it a try.

Thanks,
R

Hi Randy

Unfortunately, not Unity 3D (TC1100's use openGL 1.2 and not the required 1.4). However, Unity 2D is working fine (as it did in 10.10 also) having added the PPA manually. I haven't noticed any problems with Unity 2D yet but I guess it's still early days. Thanks for the info about bluetooth, I have tried this yet.

If your interested in Gnome 3, I've tried both openSUSE and Fedora live CD's on the TC1100's but had problems with both. openSUSE's display and graphics were messed up and Fedora wouldn't load to the desktop.

I guess the TC1100's are showing there age (graphically) now.

From this document

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DemystifyingUnityGraphicsHardwareRequirements

The Open GL version needs to be 1.4 or higher and the proprietary nvidia drivers are recommended for you.

What drivers do you recommend?
AMD GPUs:

Fglrx driver: We have had some issues with the fglrx driver but we have been able to resolve them. With the fglrx driver, you will be missing features such as Kernel Mode Setting (KMS).
Open Source Radeon driver: can exhibit rendering artifacts on some systems. In the "System 3" configuration, Unity is not usable due to serious rendering issues.
NVidia GPUs: Nvidia propietary drivers.
Intel GPUs: Intel open source drivers.

The Nvidia 96 driver that we had to wait for to be able to run Compiz in 10.10 can not be installed in 11.04. Because of this, it doesn't appear that we can run Compiz in 11.04.

I tried installing these drivers yesterday but the installation fails :(. Noticed that you have a different graphics chipset in your TC1100. Is this 32MB or more? From the link you provided (other post), it seems Unity 3D requires 128MB so 3D is out of the question for me.

I installed the nvidia-96 package two different ways (one where I installed enough dependicies so it would install, and another where I forced it) but then Ubuntu no longer boots.

Looks like 3D is hopeless on 11.04 for now.

Here's what I have so far: http://linuxdeal.com/how-to-ubuntu-11.04-hp-tc1100

Pointless post only to say that there are still people wanting to get Unity to run nicely on the HP TC1100 as well as all the features of the device.
So thanks to you all trying. I would help if I could understand anything...:/

I tried installing the NVidia 96 a few different ways, and it just plain won't work. After trying just about everything it appears to be by design, as if the driver is blacklisted.

Also, I noticed on your web guide that you say suspend is working correctly. Actually, suspend is one of the features that no longer works on my machine following the upgrade. Bluetooth is also broken. I can live without 3d and Bluetooth, but I really miss suspend. Any ideas about how to troubleshoot this?

Cheers,
Randy

I installed fresh (no upgrade) and suspend just worked. In previous versions we installed some scripts that ran before/after suspend to fix the stylus or turn wireless back on. It is possible that these scripts are causing trouble now; see if you can remove them. Beyond that there may be some specific log files you can look at, but I'm not really sure which ones. This is why I do a fresh install for each new version.

Bluetooth is on and looks all right but I haven't tested it.

If all else fails and you need suspend, just reinstall.

------------

Developers have confirmed that there is no working nvidia-96 driver for 11.04. They are working on it, so it should be released at some point. About one to two months if I had to guess. Let's hope unity will work after that.

I re-submitted a patch for the stylus buttons (see the launchpad link at the bottom of my guide (http://linuxdeal.com/how-to-ubuntu-11.04-hp-tc1100)). It doesn't quite work now but it's a good start. Please try to get it working if you have that C programming skill ;]

Hi!
Thank you all for this thread. I've been using tc1100s for some years now and I keep coming back to this thread for advise. :)
Yesterday I installed ubuntu 11.04 on my latest tc1100 (I'm a kind of an addict), I followed all the tutorials I could find and dug in the forums, but unfortunately I can't activate the wifi card (I've tried from the BIOS, it says that it is ON) and when I rotate the screen, it all becomes blurry and I have to go back to landscape...
Any ideas...?
Thank you very much!!!

The BIOS shows the wireless as activated. I'm afraid that the command didn't activate it... :(

What could I do with the wireless? Should I reinstall Ubuntu?

Thanks! I've been developing it from scratch since November; still not getting much traffic though (1300/month).
The truth is I rarely use my TC1100 and I run 10.04 on my primary system, so I've never used Unity. What would I mention about it? Screen rotation and cellwriter were both having problems before I switched to Ubuntu classic no effects.

OK I fired up my TC1100 to test the command. You need to enter the command as root (and not sudo). I updated my guide to reflect this. "sudo su" will switch to root. I presume su stands for switch user. If this command doesn't work then I don't know what's wrong with it. Paste the terminal output from the echo command.

Random tip: "sudo !!" will add sudo to the last command you entered.

These commands might give some hints to what's amiss:
lspci - should see if Linux is detecting your wireless card and what model it is)
ifconfig - lists all network interfaces
iwconfig - lists all wireless network interfaces

I'm no wireless expert but I have had issues of my own on an old thinkpad with an ancient atheros wireless card. I found these good resources for wireless troubleshooting.

Yep, it is a "Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)"

iwconfig - lists all wireless network interfaces

This is what I got...

No, 3d doesn't work with the lastest ubuntu. They're still working on a nvidia driver. Older versions of ubuntu work fine though.

This is the problem with proprietary computer hardware -- support goes away.

I've followed the instructions on Linux Deal but I'm having issues with the screen rotate commands. It doesnt appear to work and I cant work out why. I tried calling it from the command line and got this:

HP-Tablet-PC-Tx1100:~$ xrandr -o left
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 153 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (RRSetScreenConfig)
Serial number of failed request: 14
Current serial number in output stream: 14

I've also tried to do the rotate command from the control panel but it's not got an option to rotate there.

Have I not installed something correctly on my TC1100?

Hi EvilKeg,

If it is a Nvidia video chipset:
lspci | grep VGA
and you are using the proprietary driver, you need rotation enabled in the xorg.conf with:
Option "RandRRotation" "on"
See appendix 1 in the Rotation HOW TO (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6274392&postcount=1).

UPDATE:::Fixed found I had to update the xf86-input-wacom driver per the launchpad instructions and it didn't take the first time. Had to use the autogen.sh method. So it now works properly.

Hello all from sunny Florida!!! Had a quick question I have everything working with the rotate script found earlier in this post. It is bound to a key and rotates but the stylus doesn't move. I can type the xsetwacom command after I rotate the screen (the same command that is in the script) and it rotates the stylus but it will not do it with the script. I know it has to be something easy I am missing but can't quite figure it out. The script is:

#!/bin/sh
if [ -n "$(xrandr | grep 768x1024)" ]; then
xrandr -o normal
xsetwacom set "Serial Wacom Tablet stylus" rotate NONE
else
xrandr -o left
xsetwacom set "Serial Wacom Tablet stylus" rotate cw

Ok I got Xubuntu Oneiric successfully installed on my TC1100 (1 ghz Pentium M) runs nice and cool, I got rotate to work using the script at the beginning of this page. Note that the proprietary Nvidia drivers (Nvidia 96) are already installed and work out of the box in (X)ubuntu 11.10 so you have to edit your xorg.conf to use XRandR for the rotate script to work.

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Option "RandRRotation" "True"
EndSection

I also got the screen brightness adjustable using this script

#!/usr/bin/env bash

if [[ ! -f /sys/devices/platform/tc1100-wmi/jogdial ]]; then
zenity --info --text="This kernel does not have TC1100 WMI support."
exit 1
fi

echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/tc1100-wmi/jogdial
zenity --info --text="Use the jog dial to adjust the brightness. Press OK when done."
echo 1 > /sys/devices/platform/tc1100-wmi/jogdial

exit 0

then
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/bright

The only problem with this is that you have to use sudo or gksu to make the script work

also suspend and hibernate are broken (blank screen), and I can't get an on screen keyboard on the startup screen:confused:
