Hey!
Just wondering has anyone out there heard of this problem and maybe know what is going on. Only recently we installed a brand new Belkin wireless router in the house. So far I haven't got it working with Ubuntu, but it was all ok with XP. That's right, was!
Recently my wireless network connection won't link up with my laptop under XP. The network is detected, and supposedly connected under the 'Wireless Network Connection', but in the system tray the red 'X' indicating no network connection is showing. Only now did I try to see if the internet browser was actually connected, and to my surprise it was, even though the icon tray says otherwise!
Anyone experience this before?

I've seen that happen before too. Not sure why, usually a reboot will fix the icon.

Yes - or at least I think I remember seeing this. I don't often use Windows and even less often use Windows on my laptop, so I'm going from memory here. The red X over a network icon was probably referring to your ethernet connection which, of course, would have been unplugged. I've certainly seen a working wireless network icon together with a red X ethernet network icon on a Windows system tray. But why your system tray is only showing one I don't know - but it doesn't surprise me. On my laptop the system tray has recently decided not to show me the battery/power icon (which is handy  ), and I don't know how to get it back again. Not that I'm going to spend too much time and effort trying to find out. :)

Go to Control Panel and then Power Options... make sure the "Show icon in system tray" box is checked.

And as said above, a re-start should fix the wireless connection icon..

Good luck..

I saw this on my roomie's lappy when I was setting it up for her. It was a Dell with an Intel ProWireless, and the wireless driver from Intel was conflicting with the driver in Win; the Intel driver was saying that it was connected while the Win driver, and tray icon, said it wasn't. It took me a couple trys to get it working on our encrypted connection, but once I finally got it there were no issues. If you're able to browse OK, I wouldn't worry about it too much.
