View Full Version : gtkwifi seems to disconnect and reconnect my connection every few seconds

Hi

Thank you for this app! Its an absolute pain to do this manually all the time. However my problem is that whenever I add gtkwifi to my panel and reconnect to my wifi router, the connection does not stay connected but connects and disconnects every few seconds - endless loop.

I have a Toshiba 3480CT laptop running hoary ubuntu with a US Robotics USR5410 wifi card and a USR9106 wifi router.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

This happens to me too; the networking control center applet in GNOME handles it just fine, but GTKWifi keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every few seconds. I had to give up on it.

the GNOME applet is feature deprived, but stable as a rock. I'm still trying to figure out it's secret, where it can connect and nothing else can

Are you guys using Aethros cards? The current version of Madwifi has some problems with some cards using stuff like GTKWifi and Netapplet, especially with the ABG chips, but I had a little trouble with an A/B PC Card too.

They're aware of it (hoo boy did I make them aware of it) but it's not fixed yet.

Yeah, I'm using an atheros card. That makes sense. Guess I'll wait for a better madwifi...

I don't know why the gtkwifi applet doesn't work. Why can't it just be a frontend for the terminal commands to control the wireless card (iwconfig, dhclient, etc)? These work just fine for me...

Maybe I'll whip up an applet that uses the console tools...

It DOES do that...I had a look at the (1.0.6) source. The problem is, madwifi can't handle iwscan without losing the current connection.

gtkwifi uses the wireless-tools, the user above just found out why it disconnects, the gtkwifi keeps scanning for networks even when you're already connected, some kind of option will be added later to allow users of atheros chipsets to disable the scanning.

I've tried both netapplet and gtkwifi on my atheros wireless running Hoary. Both cause the same effect, constant loss of connection with my AP.

I've tried the latest version of gtkwifi which was 1.0.8.1.

Is there any way to tell gtkwifi not to scan when connected to an AP?

I ran into this with NetworkManager under FC4 and that was the fix.

try using Wifi-Radar... it's in breezy right now.

works just fine, but you have to use it in conjunction with the gnome applet ;-)

I have that installed. It also does affect the interface as the network monitor applet displays the yellow warning notification. It's not bad. The other 2 are better, IMHO.

I don't often use many different APs, but when my DSL was out, the local coffee house became very useful.

has anything come of this? I just reinstalled breezy on my "new" laptop, and discovered the same problem that everyone else here is having using the atheros card. I'm using a Cisco ABG card that used to work great in the previous versions of gtkwifi.

I will try to get this to work with the gnome applet. Thanks everyone who posted! helps me reassure myself i'm not crazy. :)
